How to quickly set accessibility options in OS X

OS X includes a number of accessibility options that are intended to help those with disabilities but which could be useful for everyone. For example, the OS X screen-zooming option offers an easy way to increase the size of items on your screen, and the use of sticky keys can help you trigger complex hot keys with one hand where they might otherwise be easier with two.

These features can be set up through the Accessibility system preferences, but if you make use of some of the common ones, Apple has a quick option for accessing their settings.

Apple pays $10M to license Palm, other patents

Apple may once have called Palm's patents essentially worthless, but it doesn't seem to think that anymore.

The company reportedly spent 1 billion yen, or $10 million, to license patents from Access Co., a Japanese company that makes software for mobile devices, set-top boxes, and other products. Access acquired PalmSource, the owner of the Palm operating system, in late 2005.

McAfee All Access 2013 Review

Now owned by Intel, McAfee All Access is a professional-grade personal computer security suite that comes with apps for Mac and Android. It's the premium security product from McAfee, but while its features are top-notch, its competitors do better at security-efficacy benchmarking.

Installation McAfee All Access doesn't have the fastest installation around, but it's not horrifically slow. From download to ready-to-use, the entire process took about six and a half minutes. By contrast, Symantec's Norton goes 0 to 60 in less than a minute.

McAfee appears to have fixed the suite's problems with oversensitivity toward … Read more

Senators aim to extend ban on Internet access tax

A couple of senators in Washington want to make sure people in the U.S. never have to pay taxes for Internet access.

Make use of the built-in VPN service in OS X

If you access your computer remotely, then services like Apple's "Back to my Mac" have their conveniences; however, this and similar services are useful for individual machines only. On the other hand, if you have more than one device on your home network that you might wish to directly access, then using a virtual private network is beneficial as it places your system on your home's network so you can communicate with devices as if you were at home.

Often the implementation of this is to use a hardware-based VPN (likely built into your home router) … Read more
