Prepare for and respond to a lost or stolen smartphone

How bad is the smartphone-theft epidemic? San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon accuses phone companies of profiting from stolen phones, as Michael Scherer reported last month on Time's Swampland site. Gascon is one of several leading law-enforcement officials calling for carriers to be required to implement technology that permanently deactivates stolen phones. It is simply too easy for thieves to resell smartphones.

One year ago, the major cellphone services announced via the CTIA Wireless Association plans to create a database "designed to prevent GSM smartphones reported as stolen from being activated or provided service." The database was … Read more

Create disk images with Free ISO Creator

Unlike zipping files, creating compressed ISO archives isn't as easy as a simple right click. Free ISO Creator is a solid tool to help you turn multiple files into a writable ISO image file. The program does exactly what it says it will. However, it's not the easiest or most customizable creation software you'll ever use.

The program gains major points just for being free. There aren't many similar programs that can say the same. However, there are a good deal of things missing that might be available in a paid program. Free ISO Creator is … Read more

Treat your Mac to World Backup Day

This Sunday, March 31, is World Backup Day, an independent initiative geared to raise awareness for data security and the importance of backing up computers and other devices that may contain important information. Backing up a system used to take a number of steps, and while there are many options and approaches for doing so, these days most devices include some sort of regular backup option that, if used, should be enough to … Read more

Back up your Android SMS with VeryAndroid SMS Backup

Unfortunately, the option to back up your text messages is not built in to the syncing software on Android devices. VeryAndroid SMS Backup offers a very effective solution to this problem: users download the application on their mobile device and a separate manager tool on their PC. The result is a great SMS management system.

The setup for VeryAndroid SMS Backup takes very little time, but it does require installation of the PC software and a brief registration. The application itself is pretty straightforward. The intuitive main screen has only a few buttons with functions such as Backup, Restore, and … Read more

Backblaze shares third-gen storage server design

Backblaze, a startup offering online backup service, has released the designs for its newest Storage Pod, a low-budget storage server with 180TB of capacity.

It was something of a PR stunt when the company shared its first-gen Storage Pod design back in 2009, but the 67-terabyte system proved useful to organizations including the Vanderbilt University Institute of Image Science, which stores medical imaging data, ad agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky, and and the Geographic Information Network of Alaska. Netflix was inspired to share its Open Connect Appliance Hardware design, and Backblaze also showed its Storage Pod 2.0 design, which could … Read more

Protect your most critical data with Everyday Auto Backup

Backups are critical, period. Automatic or manual, full or partial, whatever -- as long as you're taking action to protect your irreplaceable personal files, your expensive software, and maybe your sanity. Full backups are best, but we also like extra protection for the data that changes the most, such as User files, as a backstop against those disasters that somehow seem to know when you're between backups. Everyday Auto Backup's name says it all: it makes automatic data backups every day (or when you want it to). It addresses some lingering issues about backup software, beginning with … Read more

Happy Valentine's Day, cheeps! Here's hoping you have a day filled with love, chocolate, and, of course, deals.

That's right: deals, plural. I couldn't settle on just one today, so I've rounded up three (well, five, technically) to make your day a little sweeter.

1. Pogoplug Mobile The Pogoplug Mobile is a small box that plugs into your home router and streams your media libraries to your Android or iOS device.

Typical Pogoplug, right? The Mobile adds one key feature to the mix: it can automatically back up photos and videos captured with your phone … Read more
