Sliced butter: Best thing since sliced bread

I am not very good with a butter dish. Either that, or I'm not very good with a knife. One way or the other, butter ends up on the floor. Sometimes it's just the pat of butter I'm trying to free from the rest of the stick, sometimes it's the butter dish, and sometimes it's everything: butter, knife, and toast. Since I have never been one to play by the 5-second rule, it gets thrown out and I try again. There's a reason they call it butterfingers.

So anyway, after I remember that I … Read more

Mix peanut butter right in the jar with old-fashioned gadget

I always thought it was a good thing to mix up newly purchased natural peanut butter. If you've ever accidentally turned a PB&J into a peanut paste, oil slick, and jam sandwich, you know why. To avoid this horror, usually you stick a butter knife into the jar and stir, stir, stir. Eventually the natural oils and peanut solids mix into the creamy, much loved substance that goes well with anything and everything.

As a bonus for doing all that hard stirring, the knife invariably gets covered in peanut butter. One could wipe it alongside of the … Read more

Spread the word about spreadable butter

I like my bread with butter. Call me a purist, but something about the processed quasi-butter spreads really freak me out. Even though it spreads straight out of the fridge, it usually tastes like it came out of a chemistry lab and not from a farm.

The problem with liking butter, however, is that including it in your brunch table spread requires some advance thinking. If you don't remember to take it out until your guests arrive, then you end up with a rock-hard block that folds over the edge of your knife when you try to spread it, … Read more

Baron Zen, 'Burn Rubber': Free MP3 of the Day

The first response on listening to Baron Zen, a turn-of-the-'90s jack-of-all-synths who was helped by the young Peanut Butter Wolf, is that it couldn't possibly have been made then. The funky-but-melodic keyboard tones have the hooky electro style of Daft Punk but the taste of James Murphy.

Yahoo Photos shutting down. Flickr is the new hotness.

Brad Garlinghouse, SVP of Yahoo and author of the famous "Peanut Butter Manifesto," in which he told people inside Yahoo that the company was spread too thin, told me tonight at a dinner that "I'm eating my own peanut butter." On Friday, he said, Yahoo will begin to close down Yahoo Photos, in favor of Flickr, the competing photo sharing site the company bought about two years ago.

Yahoo Photos users will be given the opportunity to move their pictures over to Flickr. But Garlinghouse admits that Flickr isn't the right sharing site for … Read more

Robot lobster invades the deep

The invasion of the robots is heading into the sea.

Just a few days ago, we witnessed an underwater robot lumberjack that bore an unsettling resemblance to Spongebob Squarepants. Now the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum is showcasing a bionic lobster that is joining the denizens of the deep, mimicking its living counterparts for research purposes in coastal waters.

As Ubergizmo points out, the Crustastun may have finally met its match.
