2013 Cadillac XTS: Caddy tries its hand at a large sports sedan

LOS ANGELES--Cadillac killed two old birds with one stone today.

The old birds in question are the aging DTS and STS luxury sedan that will likely both be replaced by the new 2013 Cadillac XTS sedan unveiled here at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show this morning.

The XTS gets a healthy dose of Cadillac's Art and Science design language, so it's no surprise that the sedan ends up looking quite a bit like a larger, more upright version of the automaker's popular CTS sedan. The XTS also shares the 3.6-liter, direct-injection V-6 engine that lurks … Read more

Cadillac revamps the instrument panel with CUE

SAN DIEGO--Cadillac has introduced a new central instrument panel that features touch-screen technology popularized by smartphones and tablets. The fully capacitive faceplate has an 8-inch touch screen that utilizes multitouch gestures to interact with it. Cadillac says this sets it apart from other car in-dash units that have an overabundance of buttons and controls.

The instrument panel is called CUE and it stands for Cadillac User Experience. In addition to a touch screen that lets you tap, swipe, and pinch in and out, it also has a proximity sensor so that when your hand approaches the screen, certain shortcut icons will appear. You can also enable haptic feedback, so that the screen pulses when you select something. Aside from the touch screen, the overall interface features fewer buttons, large icons, and natural voice recognition. You can pair up to 10 Bluetooth devices to it, and it's also compatible with USB keys, SD cards, and, of course, the iPod or iPhone. The entire faceplate opens up to reveal a 1.8L storage area as well. … Read more

Is a nuclear-powered car in our future?

As a design exercise to show what a vehicle capable of lasting 100 years without maintenance could look like, Cadillac debuted at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show its World Thorium Fueled concept car powered by nuclear energy. While the vehicle didn't contain a working thorium-fueled nuclear reactor, one researcher says that the technology is within our reach.

Charles Stevens, a researcher at the Massachusetts R&D firm Laser Power Systems, is creating a prototype of a thorium-powered laser that can be used to generate enough energy to power a vehicle while producing zero-emissions, according to an article in … Read more

It's not the accolade and track record manufacturers strive for, but once again the Cadillac Escalade tops the charts as the most frequently stolen vehicle in the U.S.

The Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), tracking insurance claims for vehicle thefts, found that for all 2008-2011 model year vehicles, the Escalade is reported stolen to insurance companies at a rate that's 10 times the average vehicle. For every 1,000 vehicles, the SUV racks up 10.8 theft insurance claims. On the other side of the scale, the Lexus RX 350 is reported to agencies only 0.6 times per 1,000 vehicles. … Read more

Cadillac drops the cloth and top on new Ciel concept

Has Cadillac made a new classic? GM's top-of-the-line brand unveiled a new convertible concept at Pebble Beach that's a new take on how America's old money should roll.

The Ciel is a convertible touring sedan with contemporary retro styling that's a throwback to the old days when Cadillac's land yachts ruled the country club lots. Not exactly a fuel sipper, the four-seater is a hybrid powered by a 425-horsepower 3.6L V-6 engine with twin turbochargers, and its lithium-ion battery can propel the vehicle at low speeds.

Its dimensions are equally impressive. The Ciel has … Read more
