Motorola won't update Charm or Flipout beyond Android 2.1

Motorola has decided to pull back on plans to update its Charm (T-Mobile) and Flipout (AT&T) handsets with Android 2.2 Froyo.

Of course, that means that the smartphones, which were released with Android 2.1 back in the fall, will remain on Eclair indefinitely. The handsets join a growing list of Motorola phones being left behind on older versions of Android. Most recently, the company decided that the Cliq XT would stay on Android 1.5 and never see features such as Google Maps Navigation or live wallpapers.

Seeking all sports nuts: Coveroo phone cases

If you're like me, you might have been on a fruitless hunt for a customized iPhone case that touts your beloved sports team, only to discover nobody seems to have any. Is it critical for me to own an iPhone case themed after the New York Jets? Hardly, but I'm a superstitious fellow and I like my digital trinkets and amulets.

Coveroo, which makes custom cases for iPhones, BlackBerries, iPods, iPads, and many other devices, doesn't actually have an NFL teams license, although it does have a license for NFL players. They have NBA and MLB licenses, … Read more

Dialed In 142: Nice try, Dell

Look out Dell, Bonnie is not happy. Your Android smartphone, the Aero, recently passed through her hands and all she can say is that it's "unintuitive, slow, and limited in functionality." And don't forget that it only runs on Android 1.5. Fortunately, Samsung fared better with its Fascinate Galaxy S handset for Verizon Wireless, but plenty of people are miffed that Verizon replaced Google's search with Microsoft's Bing.

Outside of reviews, cell phone news is a little slow this week. Apple's iOS 4.1 update went live today, a few Android rumors … Read more

T-Mobile's Moto Charm on sale August 25 for $75

T-Mobile let it slip through its Twitter account Wednesday that the Motorola Charm will be available beginning Wednesday, August 25. The carrier also announced on its Facebook page that the Android device will carry a price tag of $74.99 with a contract.

If you're not familiar with Charm it sports a quirky rectangular design in "golden bronze." The 2.8-inch capacitive touch-screen is smaller than we'd like, though it has a full QWERTY keyboard.

The handset runs Android 2.1 and MotoBlur while offering a 3-megapixel camera with Kodak Perfect Touch technology, voice dialing, Bluetooth, … Read more

T-Mobile turns on the Motorola Charm

T-Mobile has come under the spell of another Android device, and it goes by the name of Motorola Charm.

Available later this summer, the Charm will ship running Android 2.1 and an enhanced version of Motoblur. The latter includes such improvements as resizable widgets (much like the Droid X), better management of your social-networking streams, and the option of different power modes to conserve battery consumption.

Setting it apart from the flood of other Android devices coming this summer is the Motorola Charm's squarish design, complete with a full QWERTY keyboard. It also has a 2.8-inch capacitive … Read more

Epson adds PictureMate Charm to personal photo kiosks

Just in time for the holiday gift-buying rush, Epson on Tuesday announced a brand new PictureMate personal photo printer. We've reviewed plenty of Epson's 4x6 photo printers in the past, but its latest PictureMate Charm promises maximum versatility and print durability for just $150.

The PictureMate Charm gives home photo enthusiasts a new way to produce lab-quality photos on the go at parties, special events, family vacations, and so on, thanks to the inclusion of a carrying handle and a dual-purpose lid that also happens to double as a paper input tray.

Creative types will be pleased to see a variety of color effects and layout options that turn photos into wallet-size proof sheets, stickers, and more. Featuring 5760x1440 dpi, the PictureMate Charm boasts the highest print resolution in its class with built-in auto photo correction and red-eye removal in tow. The Charm will also come with ink and 100 sheets of either glossy or matte-finish 4x6-inch photo paper.

iPhone cell phone charms at last...Yay?

Leave it to the Japanese to finally figure out a way to add cell phone charms to the iPhone, or just about any handheld that doesn't have a little loop for the charm to wrap around (which seems to be a must-have design option in Japan). The answer? Adhesive buttons. Just stick 'em on your phone (iPhone or otherwise) and wrap your strap/dongle/charm of choice to it.

This isn't an iPhone-specific thing of course, but I guess there are a surprising number of people wanting to attach a charm to the iPhone and realizing they can'… Read more

Grilling for dummies

I like my steak medium rare, but my husband doesn't want one bit of pink in his. I like my barbecue sauce on the mild side, while he likes his super spicy. I don't have any allergies to worry about, but there's a whole list of foods that can't touch his. In the hustle and bustle of making dinner, however, how the heck can I tell the difference between his food and mine?

Grill Charms are a surprisingly simple solution. Before you even start cooking, you can stick a Grill Charm in a particular piece of … Read more
