An update to Flickr for iOS released Thursday lets people try out filters before they take a photo.
Filters, popularized by apps like Facebook's Instagram, give a different style or look to a photo, and Flickr has been playing catch-up with its mobile apps. The new version of the app lets people try the effects in advance with live filters, adds several new ones, and lets people customize filters.
The new version also adds significant features to the camera app, which works on iPhones and iPads. Grids can help keep horizons level, and photographers can lock focus and exposure, … Read more
When Flickr co-founder Stewart Butterfield and his team realized that their online game Game Neverending wasn't going to be a hit, they turned the game's photo-sharing tool into a stand alone product -- and got lucky.
Fast forward 8 years and Butterfield is at it again. His new company Tiny Speck, which employs much of the same team as before, shelved its online game Glitch last year. Now, they've taken the customized communications … Read more
Google continues to be a favorite recruiting ground for Marissa Mayer, who confirmed Tuesday that Yahoo has hired Zagat's managing director to lead Flickr.
Bernardo Hernandez Gonzalez, who worked with the Yahoo chief executive during her previous stint at Google, broke the news Tuesday on Twitter, and Mayer quickly confirmed the hire with a retweet:

In an unusual example of a protracted outage on a major Internet property, a Yahoo's Flickr site will be offline for six hours on Thursday for maintenance.
Flickr announced the outage on its blog Tuesday, saying that the photo-sharing site will be unavailable from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. PT on July 25.
"During this time, Flickr will be unavailable on web and mobile," Flickr staff member Thea Lamkin said in the blog post.
The outage will be broader than that, though: other sites that use Flickr photos via its application programming interface also won'… Read more
Nokia's upcoming 41-megapixel Windows Phone may have finally found a permanent name.
Among a stream of photos snapped on June 29 by Microsoft Windows Phone VP Joe Belfiore, at least two of them list the Nokia Lumia 1020 as the source. One photo was taken at a resolution of 2,947x1,658 pixels, while the other came in at 2,352x1,568 pixels.
Packed with a 41-megapixel camera, the upcoming phone has been known by a variety of names, including EOS, 909, and 1020. The camera source listed in Belfiore's photos seems to indicate that Nokia finally decided … Read more
For years, Flickr has been a largely independent Yahoo fiefdom, but apparently now it's time for the photo-sharing site to come closer to the corporate fold -- over some Flickr users' objections.
Last week, the company added a pale Yahoo menu bar above the dark Flickr menu bar atop the screen. The new menu bar presents Yahoo users with options for navigating to Yahoo sites for news, sports, finance, weather, and more, and at the far left side is a compact purple "Y!" logo.
Flickr users started complaining about the new menu bar immediately on Flickr's … Read more

Update at 8:35 a.m. PT: The site's functionality has been restored, according to a Flickr spokesperson.
Flickr is having performance issues just a few days after a major site revamp.
Some users have been unable to access the site at all, while others have run into delays logging in or launching certain pages. Certain tasks, such as logging into my Flickr account and accessing my Photostream page, each took several minutes to complete.
The photo-sharing site acknowledged the problem in a tweet early Friday, telling users: "Experiencing slowness or having trouble accessing the site? We're … Read more
Yahoo is clearly aware that many Flickr users are unhappy about the photo-sharing site's new look and layout.
On Monday, Yahoo revamped Flickr with a host of changes, including a larger photo layout, new home page and photo stream page, and 1TB of free storage space per person. But Flickr users quickly expressed their unhappiness over the changes. A slew of people chimed in on the site's help forum to give the new look a thumb's down and pleading for a return to the old style.
Users are always thrown by major changes to their favorite Web … Read more
