CNET Car Tech: 2011 Ford Mustang GT Premium

A Mustang fastback with a 5.0 liter has long been the formula for classic American fun. But Ford has outdone itself with the latest reinvention of the 5.0 motor that brings aspirational performance to an affordable modern classic. Brian Cooley takes you for a drive to check the tech.

Seatbelt buckles have gone to the dogs

Dog owners may like to show off their Ford or Chevy pride by giving their pets logo seatbelt-buckle collars and nylon strap leashes from Buckle-Down.

The Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Bowtie logo collars and leashes are made from recycled, or refurbished, sturdy nylon straps. In addition to Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Bowtie logos, Buckle-Down has a half-dozen other designs to choose from.

The collars have a welded D ring so the matching lead can easily be attached. The collar snaps tight with a miniature seatbelt buckle. The buckle locks securely and releases with the push of a button, making it … Read more

Mustang Boss 302 gets a split personality with Ford TracKey

Owners of Ford's upcoming 2012 Mustang Boss 302 will soon be offered a deceptively simple way to boost their vehicle's performance and make the mighty 302 even more bad-ass. The TracKey doesn't just unlock the doors and fire up the engine, it also transforms the production Boss 302 into a competition-ready track car with a turn of a key.

The TracKey package consists of a second key for the Boss Mustang--the TracKey itself--that features a red Boss logo. This key isn't just for show; starting the Mustang using this key unlocks the second part of the … Read more

Bring on the Mustangs (SEMA preview)

Yesterday, we took a sneak peek at some of the custom Ford vehicles that will be on hand at the 2010 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, NV. However, that list was all Fiestas, Explorers, and Fusions. Where were the Mustangs?

Today, Ford delivers with an all-pony car preview of a few of the custom Mustangs, most of which started life as 5.0 GT models, that we'll see at the show. From the pink Creations n' Chrome convertible to the street-warrior-themed MRT custom coupe, it's always a thrill to see the completely different directions the customizers take when … Read more

Hang a classic car on the wall of your man cave

There's a Nudie-built Elvis car hanging on a 50-foot wall behind the bar of Buck Owens' Crystal Palace in Bakersfield, Calif. Legend has it Owens won the car in a poker game against the King, but now that both men are deceased, we may never know.

While 3D Classic Car Shelves from Gadgets and Gear aren't the stuff legends are made of, one of these babies won't need a 50-foot wall either.

Replicas of the front end of classic automobiles, the shelves come in shapes ranging from muscle cars such as the 2010 Chevy Camaro and … Read more

Battle of the axes: Rock Band 3's Pro guitar vs. real guitar

With Rock Band 3, music games take a significant leap, adding a level of real-music simulation previously unseen in this genre. Part of it is the two-octave MIDI keyboard that comes with the game, but even more interesting is the optional Pro-level guitar controller. Made by MadCatz and using a licensed Fender Mustang design, the guitar has separate buttons for each string at every fret--102 buttons in all--meaning one can play actual guitar chords on it.

To compare the experience to actual music-making, I whipped out a real guitar (in this case a Fender Telecaster--sorry, I don't have a Mustang) and did a side-by-side run-through. By hooking up this Pro guitar and playing on the hard or expert difficulty levels, the guitar part consists of the actual chords from the song in question.

Unfortunately, the onscreen notation for this was unfathomable to me, with lines of varying heights indicating the fingering, starting with a root note. Fortunately, the actual chord names float by at the same time, and if you stick with those, the effect is very close to real guitar playing. … Read more

Ford revives the Boss 302 for 2012

Race-ready limited production 2012 Mustang Boss 302 unveiled

You might not remember the 1969 Mustang Boss 302. But if you do, you'll be even more excited about today's announcement of the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 and the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca.

Based on the 2011 Mustang GT, the Boss 302 features upgrades to the engine output, brakes, suspension, interior, and exterior. It's lighter in weight and offers better aerodynamics and track performance, according to a Ford news release.

"The decision to build a modern Boss was not entered into lightly," said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. "The … Read more

What's more American than a muscle car? (concept car Friday)

More than trucks, more than minivans and SUVs, I believe that there's no better vehicular representation of America than the muscle car. However, with muscle cars come deep seeded loyalties to and rivalries among the three manufacturers and their respective vehicles. Specifically, we're talking about Ford's Mustang, Dodge's Challenger, and Chevrolet's Camaro. In a recent episode of Car Tech Live, we three hosts were asked which modern muscle car we'd each have and came up with three very different answers. Rather than spend our Independence Day weekend arguing over which is best, we've … Read more
