T-Mobile sees a net 350 jobs eliminated from restructuring

For T-Mobile, restructuring isn't just code for layoffs.

The carrier, in the middle of a massive overhaul of the business, said it would eliminate 900 jobs, as CNET previously reported, but hire 550 new positions. The new jobs will support its new business and strategic opportunities.

T-Mobile, a unit of Deutsche Telekom, has been busy trying to get back into aggressive challenger mode after its takeover deal with AT&T collapsed. To better compete with its larger rivals, the company has embarked on a plan to upgrade its existing network this year and move to 4G LTE next … Read more

T-Mobile to cut 900 jobs in latest restructuring (scoop)

T-Mobile USA will restructure its business and hold another round of layoffs, as it seeks to reduce its operating costs.

The cuts come on top of 1,000 jobs the carrier said in March it would shed as part of its ongoing restructuring plan. In the note, Humm said the company would contact employees personally about the cuts and changes in responsibilities.

The changes are expected to make T-Mobile a … Read more

Can HP really drive PC and printer innovation?

Hewlett-Packard says it's combining its printer and PC divisions partially because the move will drive "innovation across personal computing and printing."

Oh really?

Color me decidedly skeptical on that claim, which was touted in the company's announcement today. My mental block: What exactly are the touch points between a printer and a PC, and where does the innovation lie?

HP does have printing innovation. Its inkjet technology can be used for drug delivery, for instance. However, unless your PC is delivering doses of pharmaceuticals to you, it's a stretch to see the connection.

Sure, HP … Read more

HP restructures, merging PC and printer units

Hewlett-Packard today made it official: It is merging its PC and printing units in a bid to improve the financial profile of both increasingly commoditized products.

The news, which surfaced yesterday at AllThingsD, means that Vyomesh Joshi, who led the printer unit, is retiring. The combined unit will now report to Todd Bradley.

HP said in a statement that the combination will help the company's go-to-market strategy, branding, supply chain, and customer support.

However, analysts were already questioning the rationale.

For instance, Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu said the combination isn't likely to result in much cost savings … Read more
