Dell hoping to get Android right with 10-inch Streak Pro tablet

When it comes to Android hardware makers, Dell is not a name that immediately comes to mind.

Thus far the PC giant has had a tough time cracking the Android market thanks to uninspiring phones and tablets. I see many people carrying around Android devices, but I've yet to notice someone with a Dell Aero or a Streak tablet. Companies such as HTC and Samsung own the smartphone space, while traditional computer companies struggle in this new war. Thankfully, the tablet wars are just now getting underway. As a result, Dell could find itself turning things around in short … Read more

Report: Dell 10-inch Android tablet to arrive early

Dell will reportedly launch a new 10-inch Android tablet this summer, according to a Forbes story .

Citing a source at Dell, Forbes said that the Android-based tablet would hit the market earlier than initially expected, possibly by mid-June. Briefly teased at CES in January and mentioned by Dell in February, the new Android tablet wasn't initially slated to launch until sometime next year.

If true, the new 10-inch tablet would add to Dell's current lineup of the 5-inch and 7-inch Streak Android tablets.

Outfitted with Android 2.2, aka Froyo, the Streak 5 offers a WVGA (800x480) display … Read more

Dell offering Streak tablet for $99 with PC buy

Consumers in the market for a new PC from Dell now have a chance to pick up the company's Streak 5 tablet for $99.

As part of a new promotion, Dell will kick in an unlocked Streak 5 for that $99 to any customer who spends at least $699 on a new PC. By itself, the Streak 5 normally sells for $99 with a two-year contract, while an unlocked version goes for $449 with its current discount factored in.

The Streak 5 offers a 5-inch WVGA display, placing it somewhere between most smartphones and tablets in terms of screen … Read more

Yes, there are iPad alternatives

A week ago, just after Donald Bell posted his positive review of the iPad 2, I posted a list of tablet alternatives to Apple's device. My intention was to show CNET readers the broad availability of tablets on the market, and to demonstrate what promising products are still to come. At the time I considered it a pretty innocuous post, but I should have known better when an Apple product is involved.

Over the weekend I began to receive reader e-mails asking me what the point of such a list was. The iPad was the best, of course, so … Read more

Dell sneaks in 10.1-inch Honeycomb tablet

We were a little disappointed that the upcoming Dell Streak 7 will arrive with Android 2.2. But fortunately for those wishing for some Honeycomb love from the Texas-based company, the PC maker has revealed to investors that it will pump out a 10.1-inch tablet later this year with Google's tablet OS. A Windows 7 version was announced previously.

No specific details on the Android-based Dell 10.1-inch tablet are available at this time.

Dell Streak 7 review: T-Mobile's first 4G tablet

The Dell Streak 7 is T-Mobile's first 4G tablet and a welcome comeback for Dell after the original Streak struck out.

If the $199 price tag seems too good to be true--it is. To get the Streak 7 for less than the cost of an iPod Touch, you'll need to jump into a two-year contract with T-Mobile, with a 5GB monthly plan that costs $49 a month for new customers, or $39 a month if you're already part of the T-Mobile family. A $29 monthly plan is also available, but restricted to 200MB.

If you take the … Read more

Dell Streak 7 to hit T-Mobile Wednesday for $200

The Dell Streak 7 is on its way to T-Mobile store shelves.

Starting on Wednesday, T-Mobile customers will be able to get their hands on the 7-inch tablet for $199.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and two-year contract, the carrier announced on its Twitter account today. The tablet, which is available exclusively on T-Mobile's network, will connect to the company's 4G network.

Dell dished details on the Streak 7 at CES earlier this month. The 7-inch tablet runs Android 2.2 and comes with the dual-core 1GHz Tegra T2 processor. It has a 5-megapixel camera on the … Read more

The 404 735: Where we left Wilson on a rooftop in Vegas (podcast)

Wilson's taking a day off after powering through CNET's video coverage of CES 2011, so Caroline McCarthy fills in to give us the spectator's perspective of the show and the keynote speeches. Unsurprisingly, the Samsung keynote looked just as over the top online as it did in person.

We saw a lot of cool things at CES this year, least of which was this arcade cabinet for the iPad, but this year was definitely about tablet PCs. They stole the show and came in multiple sizes, but CNET's annual Best in Show Award goes to the Motorola Xoom, although we're hoping this isn't how they show their appreciation.

Poised to go head-to-head with the Apple iPad, the Xoom is a touch screen-tablet that trumps the iPad in a few ways. It has front- and rear-facing cameras (the front is HD); it has a larger screen with a higher resolution than the iPad; and it operates on the Verizon network instead of AT&T.

It's also the first device to run the latest version of Google Android OS 3.0, code-named Honeycomb, so when it comes out sometime in the first quarter of this year, expect it to support multitasking and Verizon's ultrafast 4G network.

Verizon is also rumored to be offering the iPhone 4 pending tomorrow's announcement, and Caroline and I are both excited and nervous about its release. The Wall Street Journal reported that the company will keep its $30-a-month unlimited data plan, but our own Bonnie Cha tells us it might not get LTE 4G support until later this year--as usual, it's all up to Apple.

Aside from CES wrap-up stuff, check out the second half of today's show for Jeff's review of "American Idiot," the Broadway musical based on Green Day's music and featuring lead vocalist Billy Armstrong.

And if you're into that sort of thing, we also learn that a "Fight Club" and "American Psycho" musical are both in the works!
