4x4 freedom

4x4 Jam is an off-road racer that lets you drive wherever you want--an ongoing and changing landscape continues in every direction. This game is from the early days of the iTunes App Store, and while the gameplay is still pretty fun, it's easy to tell the graphics haven't been updated for the latest iOS devices.

Even so, 4x4 Jam still manages to be fun and worthy of a download if you've never tried it. Steer by tilting your iPhone left and right and you have several options for control sets depending on how much control over gas … Read more

Monster truck racing

Monster Trucks Nitro 2 is the sequel to popular game Monster Trucks Nitro, both with the object of racing through courses littered with obstacles to compete for the best time. In Monster Trucks Nitro 2, you're challenged to work your way up through the ranks by completing early novice courses on up to championship races using different types of vehicles depending on the race. The control system gives you a throttle control across the bottom of the screen (which you'll rarely change from full power) and the accelerometer to control flips while in the air. Though MTN2 is … Read more

Monster trucks and off-road racing for iOS

A new monster truck game came out this week and it got me thinking about off-road games on the iOS. I remember playing and writing about a few early on, like 2XL ATV Offroad and then later Reckless Racing (both are definitely worth checking out), but hadn't really seen that many off-road games recently.

In my search to complete this collection I found that good monster truck games are underrepresented in the iTunes App Store, but still managed to find a couple of old favorites that are worth checking out.

This week's collection of iOS apps is all about 4x4s. The first is an oldie but goodie with excellent off-road physics. The second is a side-scroller with huge jumps and four different types of vehicles. The last is a new monster truck game with tons of jumps, stunts, and destruction.… Read more

Ford and Toyota team on hybrids for trucks, SUVs

Auto giants Ford and Toyota plan to jointly develop a hybrid powertrain for light trucks and SUVs, in a move designed to bring hybrid technology to a wider set of vehicles.

The two companies announced the agreement today, calling it a collaboration of "equal partners" that will yield a new hybrid architecture for rear-wheel-drive vehicles later in the decade. Both companies will integrate the hybrid system into their own trucks and SUVs.

Toyota and Ford will also work together on in-car telematics, although this will focus on standards and technologies for safety and communications. They will both continue … Read more

Trucks follow cars on road to better fuel efficiency

The Obama administration today announced higher efficiency standards that will bring fuel-saving techniques to more medium and heavy-duty trucks.

The White House this morning introduced the set of rules saying they will save $50 billion in fuel costs from 2014 to 2018. The efficiency measures will reduce oil imports during that period by 530 million barrels and cut greenhouse gas emissions by about 270 million tons, according to the White House.

There will be two sets of standards, with one requiring engine manufacturers to increase efficiency and another geared at the fuel economy of trucks in different categories, such as … Read more

Breastfeeding truck coming to a city near you?

What would you do if you saw an ice cream truck with a giant boob--nipple and all--on its roof?

You'd probably do a double-take. Then, tell your kids to stay away because they can't buy ice cream from it. It's not an ice cream truck, after all. It's The Milk Truck, an on-call mobile breastfeeding vehicle that performance artist and mom Jill Miller would like to turn into a reality.

Miller--a faculty member at the School of Art at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University--is looking to raise $10,000 in funding through pledge site Kickstarter. If the breastfeeding crusader succeeds, nursing moms in the Pittsburgh area (and eventually beyond, Miller hopes) will never have to worry about finding a private spot to pump or nurse again.

"There's a reason for making The Milk Truck," Miller writes on her Web site. "To create a mobile breastfeeding unit that allows mothers to feed their babies in places where they have been discouraged: restaurants, shopping malls, public spaces, etc. Babies should be able to eat anywhere. And everywhere." … Read more

TrailerTail reduces drag, saves fuel, looks funny

You're driving down the highway. A big rig passes. Everything seems normal till you see a strange contraption attached to the rear of the trailer.

Is it a ramp for Knight Rider? Part of a rocket booster system? No, it's a TrailerTail, a device designed to improve the aerodynamics of bulky tractor-trailers.

Gas prices are bad enough for folks with a daily commute. Imagine the pump pain that trucking companies are feeling right now. According to manufacturer ATDynamics, the TrailerTail delivers 6.6 percent fuel savings at 65 mph. That can really add up when you're clocking thousands of miles each week.… Read more
