Flat people of Multiwinia! Fight!

Multiwinia is a frantic, fast-paced real-time strategy game in which armies of "bloodthirsty little stick men" duke it out in epic battles across a Tron-like landscape. The game shares the same retro, silly aesthetic as its solo-campaign predecessor Darwinia--with graphics and sound effects that are simultaneously savage and whimsical--but the gameplay is definitely geared toward multiple players (AIs or online opponents), with over 40 different maps and six game types that will feel familiar to multiplayer fans: Domination, King of the Hill, Capture the Statue, Assault, Rocket Riot, and Blitzkrieg. Veterans of the RTS genre may find the … Read more

Cowon D2+ hands-on

I just got my hands on the latest D2+ MP3 player from Cowon, which began shipping in the U.S. earlier this week. Unlike the multihued models available overseas, the U.S. version of the D2+ only comes in black (with a possibility of silver coming eventually), and is priced at $139 (8GB) and $179 (16GB).

If you remember the original Cowon D2 from 2007, then the D2+ isn't going to seem like much of a shocker. The majority of the spec sheet features are the same: 2.5-inch QVGA resistive touch screen; music playback (MP3, WMA, FLAC, OGG, WAV,APE), video (AVI, WMV), photos, FM radio, text reader, and voice recorder. Rated battery life is still the same, excellent 52 hours of audio and 10 hours of video. Dimensions, same. Buttons, same. Kickstand, USB port, SDHC slot...same, same, same.

Fortunately, we were already big fans of the original D2, so Cowon didn't need to do much to keep us interested. The big news here is that Cowon upgraded the D2's already mind-blowing audio enhancement settings with the latest BBE+ technology (also included in the recent Cowon S9). I don't have an older D2 to compare against, but I can say subjectively that the sound really is fantastic, and I actually find the EQ and effect settings on the D2+ a little easier to navigate than on the S9--which emphasized presets over individual settings. The EQ on the D2+ also offers adjustable EQ frequency filters and bandwidth settings for the super-picky users, which I remember seeing on the S9 and Cowon O2, but not on the original D2.

Multiwinia released for Mac

Last week I wrote a post about a great deal from Ambrosia Software, which has now sadly lapsed. But the the silver lining to that cloud is that with the end of the sale comes the release of an all-new Mac game: Multiwinia!!

Multiwinia is a ferociously fun real-time strategy game with cool stylistic graphics and challenging gameplay. Those of you who have played Darwinia, also from Ambrosia, will recognize the scenery at once, but that's where the similarity ends.

Multiwinia is a geometrically-shaped 3-D land populated by the two-dimensional stick men from Darwinia, except now they're not … Read more

Fujifilm allows more pawing of its prototype 3D camera

LAS VEGAS--It's probably the least stylish digital camera on display here at PMA 2009, but it's also one of the most unusual.

As a result, Fujifilm is getting a lot of attention at its booth in the Las Vegas Convention Center with its FinePix Real 3D camera, even though it first showed the unit at Photokina last fall. It's just a prototype, but the point-and-shoot camera is capable of taking and displaying 3D photos.

The camera has two lenses, which take two different images. Then Fujifilm's RP Processor 3D takes the two images and combines them … Read more

A new perspective for 3D films at home

Everyone is raving about the "unblinkingly real" quality of watching the animated "Coraline" in 3D. That could turn to disappointment when it's time for the animated film to make its DVD and Blu-ray debut. But Dolby Labaratories, which made its name taking high-quality theater audio and compressing it for home use, thinks it has a solution.

Right now, when 3D films like "Journey to the Center of the Earth" come to disc a pair of anaglyphic paper glasses--the kind with blue/red or green/red lenses--is included with the case, which doesn't offer anything close to the experience of watching a film in 3D in the theater. It could explain why some 3D films, like "U2 3D" have yet to make it to disc at all.

As more 3D films start popping up in theaters, the quality of their appearance once you buy them on disc for home viewing is going to be an increasingly important question.

The barriers to re-creating a similar theater-quality experience are both technical and practical: some content makers believe there will have to be a whole new format to make 3D films feel the same way on the couch as they do in the theater. That would involve all new equipment, which means ditching your brand new Blu-ray player and buying yet another disc format. After all the marketing messages consumers have heard about Blu-ray in the last few years, the last thing they want to hear is that Blu-ray is suddenly obsolete. … Read more

Cowon shows off D2+ MP3 player

Details on Cowon's new D2+ touch screen MP3 player have been revealed on the Korean version of the company's Web site. As the name implies, the D2+ is an improvement on the company's relatively popular D2 MP3 player line, which made its debut in February of 2007.

Details on the pricing of the D2+ are unclear, but the company product page explicitly touts new features such as BBE+ sound enhancement (recently included on the Cowon S9), a refreshed graphic user interface, and memory expansion compatible with SD, SDHC, and MMC. Existing Cowon D2 features such as FM … Read more

Impressions of NBA All-Star Saturday Night 2009 in 3D

What do you get when TNT, the NBA, and Cinedigm come together? A movie theater experience unlike anything you've ever had before.

All-Star Saturday Night 2009 3D was shown in approximately 80 movie theaters around the United States and Canada. It showcased the Sprite Slam Dunk contest, the Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout, the Haier Shooting Stars, and the PlayStation Skills Challenge.

NBA action in high-definition on a huge movie theater screen in 3D is little piece of heaven. But I have to say I was a little skeptic at first, there was a quick screen freeze at the beginning … Read more

Buzz Out Loud 910: Palm grows a pair

We debate the proper pronunciation of WebOS from Palm. Does it rhyme with Huevos? In any case, Palm has killed the old Palm OS, so may it rest in peace. We also analyze the state of the TV industry. LCD shipments are down, so everybody's getting out of the plasma business? I guess that's why I'm not CEO of an electronics company.
