Apple announces free case for iPhone 4 users

Updated at 12:08 p.m. with additional information.

Apple plans to give iPhone 4 users a free case in hopes of satisfying concerns about the design of its antenna and signal problems.

CEO Steve Jobs made the announcement (click here for the live blog) during a press conference at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., Friday morning in response to a public-relations crisis over signal issues reported with the iPhone 4, which was unveiled in June. iPhone 4 owners will apply for the free bumper (a case that protects just the outer rim of the phone) online at Apple'… Read more

Live blog: Apple gives free cases to iPhone 4 owners

In response to the uproar over spotty reception for new iPhone 4, Apple CEO Steve Jobs spoke Friday to defend the company's handling of the matter.

One takeaway: Buyers of the iPhone 4 will be getting free cases to help prevent users' grip on the phone from weakening the signals carrying conversations. Jobs said Apple cannot make enough of the bumpers that some people have been buying, so it is working with third parties to get the cases for users.

If you're still not happy, Jobs said, "you can bring your iPhone back within 30 days for … Read more

Report: Apple, Google showed interest in Palm

The bidding for Palm earlier this year apparently attracted interest from some prominent Silicon Valley companies, including some that were reportedly mostly interested in keeping the intellectual property out of the hands of their foes.

Hewlett-Packard ultimately turned in the winning bid, agreeing in April to pay $1.2 billion for the PDA pioneer. However, before that was announced, five prominent Silicon Valley companies kicked the tires on the company, including Apple, Google, and Research in Motion, according to a Business Insider report that cites sources familiar with the negotiations.

Interest in Palm's vast library of intellectual property and … Read more

Apple addressing iPhone 4 issues Friday?

It appears that Apple's silence on the iPhone 4 issues will come to an end later this week.

Apple is planning to hold a press conference at 10 a.m. in Cupertino, Calif., on Friday to discuss the iPhone 4, according to CNET blogger Jim Dalrymple on his personal blog, The Loop. No other details were provided.

It's likely that this is Apple's attempt to address the uproar over the iPhone's signal loss problems. It's been reported by some iPhone 4 customers since the day the phone was available that when the phone is gripped … Read more

Steve Jobs, Jony Ive named smartest in tech

Fortune on Friday released its list of the 50 smartest people in tech. Topping the list of CEOs is Apple's Steve Jobs, while the company's lead designer, Jony Ive, took the top spot in the designer category.

Jobs is credited with bringing Apple back from the brink of disaster in the late 1990s, introducing products like the iMac and iPod. Jobs later lead the charge to change the mobile industry with the iPhone and mostly recent, the iPad.

"He is a visionary, a micromanager, and a showman who creates such anticipation around new products that their releases … Read more

That's Steve Jobs at Paris Opera store

For some reason, a 7-second YouTube clip of Apple CEO Steve Jobs walking through the company's new Paris Opera store has some online questioning its authenticity.

The clip, embedded below, shows Jobs quietly shuffling past shoppers in the multi-storied retail outlet at 12 rue Halevy, which opened this past weekend. The clip may be brief, but Jobs is clearly videotaped walking through the store behind Steve Cano, Apple's senior director of international retail.

Not much to see here other than Jobs checking out what certainly has to be one of the grandest interiors for any Apple store. Very … Read more

So how do Steve Jobs' e-mails really get written?

I need to share a secret with you.

Many of the baseball bats autographed by famous sluggers weren't. Many of the footballs autographed by famous quarterbacks with a gunner's arm were autographed by the arm of a hired gun. And as for Brad Pitt drawing a self-portrait on that napkin? That might have been Brad the bulbous busboy.

So for all the understandable teeth-chattering and keyboard-clicking about whether Steve Jobs really wrote a couple of e-mails about the iPhone 4 to some clearly delightful chap in Richmond, Va., how much does it matter?

In one sense, of course … Read more

Blog says Steve Jobs e-mail was real

Earlier this week, Apple called an alleged and unflattering e-mail conversation between CEO Steve Jobs and a customer a fake. Now the site that published the exchange is saying the messages definitely came from Jobs' e-mail address and is providing what it says is proof.

Gadget rumor site Boy Genius Report (BGR) on Saturday posted an explanation of how it came into possession of the e-mail exchange and gave a timeline of its discussions with the customer. The Web site also gave some detail into how it verified the authenticity of the exchange for itself before posting the original story, … Read more

Are supply issues putting Apple at risk?

Early demand for the iPhone 4 that exceeded supply could put Apple at risk and is prompting frustrated customers to consider competing smartphones, according to a new report from iSuppli.

Though Apple and its partners racked up 600,000 preorders for the iPhone 4 in one day and sold 1.7 million units in just three days, iSuppli believes the early heavy demand has come at some cost to the company.

The huge wave of preorders on June 15 caused the ordering systems of Apple and AT&T to stall, shutting out some customers and forcing the companies to … Read more
