Apple reveals plan for AirPrint wireless printing solution

A longstanding complaint with the Apple iPad is its inability to print content directly, and the best answer used to be third-party apps like Air Sharing Pro and PrintCentral that use Bonjour to share over a network.

At Apple's music event earlier this month, Steve Jobs announced that iOS 4.2 will finally allow wireless printing directly off the device, and an official press release from the company today confirms the developer release of the beta version of AirPrint.

The official iOS 4.2 software update drops in November and includes the full version of AirPrint, a service that … Read more

Audi R8 Spyder adds another engine

Audi will add a new model to its lineup of luxe sports cars. The R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI Quattro will feature a V8 engine that offers 130 hp less than its big brother, the 560 hp R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI. But with a top speed of 185 mph and only a fraction of a second slower off the line, it's still PDQ.

The upside of the smaller engine is the price: the R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI will start at 121,000 euros (about $152,169). It's a nice discount from the R8 Spyder 5.2 … Read more

Frustrating photo tool

DBGallery is a photo management program that lets users organize their photos using more sophisticated techniques than the standard folders. Alas, DBGallery falls into the category of potentially useful software that is undermined by its poorly designed interface. Although we are familiar with many of its photo organizing features, the program's layout makes it frustrating to use.

We understand what the program aims to do. Images can be sorted and stored in collections using a variety of different parameters that are included in image EXIF information, including date, camera, ISO, aperture, and more. The program has a tool for … Read more

A little over a month ago, Cerulean Studios issued forth a beta of the next version of its Trillian multinetwork chat app for desktops and mobile phones. On Tuesday, Trillian 4.2 for Windows (download) assumed the role of Stable IM Client with some minor updates from the previous version.

Among some of the changes to hit version 4.2 (up from version 4.1) are easier retweeting from the buddy window and simultaneous sign-in for Windows Live chat (meaning you can sign in at multiple locations without getting kicked off anywhere else). The history portion of the conversation window (… Read more

Setting the mapping bar

As far as mobile mapping goes, Google Maps for Android offers one of the best experiences you can get. The feature-fest, which Google has been building on for years, doesn't just tell you where you are using nothing but GPS or cell tower triangulation. It also tells you how to get where you want to go by car, public transport, good old-fashioned shoe leather, and now, by bike. Voice-guided navigation takes you turn by turn, and voice search keeps your typing fingers fresh.

A variety of add-ons layers information on top of the base map, so you can view … Read more

Trillian 4.2 beta for Windows keeps chats safe for work

Conversationalists using Trillian IM will now have a new version of the multinetwork chat app to try: Trillian 4.2 beta for Windows.

While it's still a minor update by our standards, there are a few interesting additions to this version of Trillian, including a lookup feature that can preview the contents of a hyperlink in the message window when you hover the cursor over it. In addition to saving you time by giving you the gist of the site without drawing your attention to a new browser tab, there's a good chance that previewing a hyperlink could … Read more
