YouTube Awards 2006: better late than never

YouTube has launched the first ever YouTube Awards with 70 videos in seven categories. This week viewers can vote to pick their favorites of 2006. It's kind of like the Oscars, but for user-generated video clips such as Lonelygirl15 and Ask a Ninja. As of right now, there's nothing on the awards page but a bunch of comments from confused users who have made their way to the site to find nothing to vote on. Digging deeper, clicking on playlist shows a full listing of clips. We're assuming there will be a voting system similar to the … Read more

DesignIn: Man, I could have used this a year ago

I just completed a remodeling project on my house. While I'm pleased with the results and our contractor was conscientious, managing the information around the project was a trial. DesignIn, a new service launching here at Demo 07, is designed for people like me, and the hundreds of thousands of other folks who embark on residential remodeling and construction projects each year.

The two big elements on the site are a collaborative blueprint editing system--where you can sketch out your remodel layout--and a system that lets you collect or "clip" items from the Web and connect them … Read more

Video aggregators at Demo 07: ClipSyndicate and Magnify

Everybody's trying to ride the YouTube wave. At Demo 07, in addition to several video content publishing companies, there are two interesting companies that are working on video syndication and discovery.

First, ClipSyndicate. This site takes licensed videos from various professional sources and makes them available to Web publishers. Site managers can get very specific feeds. The Demo 07 example: a site for firefighters that gets an automatic feed of videos about fires. Looks like a useful service for bloggers and people running industry-specific news sites.

Magnify is similar, but focused on user-generated content (it pulls from YouTube, not … Read more

Clippings makes browsing and online shopping easier

Clippings is a superhandy Firefox browser extension that allows you to easily paste text from a list of saved clipboards. It may sound boring, but using Clippings for Web forms and multiple e-mail signatures lets you complete those tasks more quickly, saving your keystrokes for something more important, such as actual communication.

Clippings installs as a contextual menu. Right-clicking an empty form or writing area lets you select a saved snippet from your clipboard. It took me only a minute or two to set up a fairly extensive list of commonly used entries.

The big question: How is Clippings better … Read more
