With its clean interface and accurate recording that requires nothing other than you carrying around your iPhone, Moves is a great activity tracker. It automatically tracks your activity, as long as you are walking, running, cycling, or engaged in some sort of transport like driving a car. While I walk my dog frequently, drive my kids around daily, and take my bike out regularly during the warmer months, I never jog as a general rule. I engage in a number of other activities, however, from pond hockey and downhill skiing to pick-up basketball and tennis, so Moves has left me … Read more
Ars Technica is reporting on a fix following its review of the 2013 Mac Pro where it noted especially poor performance of the new system when running Autodesk Maya 3D modeling software. Initially, the suspicion was that the issue was with Apple's drivers, or perhaps some other aspect of OS X, but after an investigation involving AMD, Apple, and Autodesk engineers, a solution has been found.
Apparently when running Maya 2014 on the new Mac Pro, the software performs very well, but when you push the polygon count of rendered scenes to a high level, performance on the new … Read more

The first Chromebook to sport a 13-inch display is now available from Toshiba.
For $300 you get a 1,366x768 display, a fast Intel Celeron processor (in the Chromebook world "fast" is anything faster than the pokey Samsung Exynos 5250 processor in the HP Chromebook 11 and Samsung Chromebook), 2GB of RAM, a 16GB solid-state drive, a claimed nine hours of battery life, and, of course, the Chrome OS.
At 0.8-inches thick, it weighs in at 3.3 pounds, but "it has an upscale feel for such an inexpensive system," according to CNET's hands-on. (… Read more
The image of the emblematic smartphone game has not been held in high regard of late. Certainly not with titles like Flappy Bird seemingly taking over the world, earning $50,000 a day off our meaningless compulsions and further cementing the well of condescension "hardcore" gamers have for the mobile platform and its capacity.
That's where Threes comes in. Released Wednesday as a universal iPhone and iPad app, the $1.99 title -- a simple math-based puzzler with gorgeous design and catchy music -- is what an overtly refreshing, downright fantastic mobile game should be.
It's … Read more

Shopping for whiskey is hard. There's a lot of jargon and terms thrown around that often lead to intimidation and end in surrender. On the rare occasion I have ordered a whiskey drink, my typical response when questioned about the type of whiskey I want has been "whatever you recommend."
Thanks to a new iOS app I might actually start learning a thing or two about whiskey. The free app called Distiller not only wants to help the whiskey aficionados expand his collection, but it wants to help people like me, who know next to nothing about … Read more
Firefox OS, Mozilla's smartphone operating system, is getting a new app for launching apps.
"The app integrates the contextual adaptive app search from EverythingMe with the Firefox for Android Web browser to offer users a personalized and customizable Web experience that is fun and intuitive," Mozilla said Wednesday in a blog post. The non-profit organization showed a preview of new app launcher Tuesday.
Firefox OS already used EverythingMe's software for presenting a dynamically generated array of links to Web apps.
"We are happy to expand our work together with this new product to give people … Read more
Flappy Bird, the newest and most savagely addicting smartphone game to have taken the mobile market by storm, is earning $50,000 in ad revenue each day, Vietnamese developer Dong Nguyen revealed Wednesday in an interview with The Verge.
While that's nothing compared with the insane $850,000 Candy Crush Saga -- the App Store's longtime leader in the top grossing charts -- earns UK developer King per day, it's certainly nothing to scoff at for a non-freemium game that was uploaded in May 2013, last updated in September, and remained virtually invisible for months. Flappy Bird … Read more
