The evolution of Samsung's Galaxy S smartphones (video)

At last, Samsung has introduced the world to the Galaxy S4 smartphone, holding its 5-inch toy aloft like a little electronic Simba. While the South Korean tech giant's latest effort is shaping up to be a dynamite little mobile, however, it didn't emerge from Samsung's forge fully formed.

Instead, the S4 is the result of years spent crafting and refining mobile tech, in an effort to build the best Android phone ever devised.

In the video above we don our big bushy Darwin beards and take a look back at the origins of Samsung's Galaxy S … Read more

Samsung probed for allegedly bashing rival HTC online

The Taiwanese Fair Trade Commission has reportedly launched an investigation into Samsung on allegations that the phone-maker was paying students to post negative online comments about HTC devices, according to AFP. HTC is one of Samsung's most staunch rivals.

Supposedly, the South Korean tech giant hired students to both write the inflammatory comments about HTC products and also recommend Samsung cell phones. The commission says that this type of behavior is akin to false advertising. According to AFP, the Fair Trade Commission spokesman Sun Lih-chyun said, "The case was set up last week after we received complaints." … Read more

Galaxy S4 Group Play makes sharing easier (hands-on)

Sharing is a big part of Samsung's products (just think of all those ads in recent months, like the one with a woman giving her husband a secret video). Now the Korean electronics giant is taking that a step further with the Galaxy S4's improved Group Play.

Galaxy S3 users will recognize this as the feature that lets them share documents and photos with others in close range. I recently got some hands-on time with Group Play on the S4 and found some nice updates to the program. In particular, future S4 owners can share music and games … Read more

Of course that discount applies only to customers who bring their service and phone number from other carriers, or existing subscribers who add another line. That lops $99.99 off the Galaxy S3's unsubsidized $549.99 price. You also have … Read more

Tablet sales will climb to $64B this year, ABI says

The tablet market should post strong growth this year, ABI Research said, as the traditional computing market slumps.

The tech research firm expects tablet sales to climb 28 percent this year to $64 billion. In terms of shipments, ABI projected a jump of 38 percent to 150 million in 2013.

"The convenience and mobility benefits afforded by tablet computers are showing no signs of slowing interest after record unit shipments and revenues were reported by device vendors in 2012," ABI said.

The tablet growth rate contrasts sharply with the traditional computing market, though PC shipments should still be … Read more

As Galaxy screen grows, Surface may shrink

CNET Update believes all Google accounts go to Heaven:

There's quite a bit of movement in Thursday's tech news roundup. Samsung pushes pocket limits with a new smartphone that boasts a 6.3-inch screen. Microsoft is expected to shrink the Surface for the popular 7-inch mini-tablet market. And the poor PC market has fallen to a record low, and the fingers point to Windows 8.

And what about wearable computers? The first units of Google Glass will be shipping within the next month. A group of investment firms -- called the Glass Collective -- are funding companies that … Read more

Cops allegedly get violent at sight of Samsung Galaxy

Cell phones have that certain power to record events that are occurring in the public sphere.

Sometimes, though, those who wield power aren't so keen to be filmed when they are exercising their might.

Here, for example, is one police officer who seems to believe that the Samsung Galaxy is a weapon.

I hadn't been aware that a slight increase in gadget-size could send it into the same category as, say, a machete.

However, in this footage a member of the San Diego Police Department seems to take great objection to being filmed on a Galaxy while writing … Read more
