Mass Effect 3 conquers the universe

It's tempting to say that there hasn't been as fully realized a science fiction universe in a generation as the one presented in the Mass Effect games, which include the just-released Mass Effect 3 (read GameSpot's review here). The game's impressive reach is supported by novels, comic books, apps, and a fanatically loyal fan base (that recently forced a tie-in novel back to the editing desk for corrections to continuity). Sci-fi blog io9 makes much the same argument, calling it, "one of the most important pieces of science fiction narrative of our generation."

Does the trilogy's end deliver? We step back into the shoes of Commander Shepard for one last trip through the galaxy.… Read more

For millions of video game fans, the name Master Chief is all they need to hear to know they're in for hours of intense game play. And for years, through iteration after iteration, the Halo franchise has kept those fans glued to their Xboxes.

This holiday season, fans will get yet another crack at the world of Spartans, the Covenant, and John-117: Halo 4.

So, what about Windows 8 on the next Xbox?

I'm about to discuss an idea currently couched in fantasy, but one that's probably occurred to more than one Windows, Xbox, or Windows Phone user already. The cards seem laid out. The coincidences and similarities seem too great to ignore. Also, there's this: we're talking about one company, Microsoft, and its products.

Here we go: could Windows 8 be on the next Xbox?

A new Xbox is likely to be on its way--maybe in just a couple of years--and rumors have flown regarding its capabilities, processing power, and even whether or not it will have physical discs. Of all of these Xbox rumors, one I don't hear discussed at all is the possibility of Windows 8 being the next Xbox's core operating system.

As weird as it sounds, it's a theoretically logical concept. Here's why. … Read more

Xbox 360 console and add-ons bundled in white

If you miss the lighter cream hue of the original Xbox 360, here's some good news: The Microsoft console is now back in white. The latest limited-edition 4GB white Xbox 360 bundle will include the console, as well as a wireless controller and Kinect sensor in the lighter shade.

The Redmond-based software giant is further sweetening the $299.99 deal with a three-month Xbox Live gold subscription and two games--Kinect Adventures and Kinect Sports--thrown in for free.

HBO Go landing on Xbox 360 on April 1?

After taking some time to break out from the browser, HBO Go is making some serious inroads into your living room.

Speaking to Engadget last night, HBO Co-President Eric Kessler said that his company plans to make HBO Go available on the Xbox 360 on April 1. The launch is by no means a coincidence: it matches up with the premiere of season 2 of HBO's hit series "Game of Thrones."

Microsoft announced last year that it would be offering HBO Go, which allows HBO subscribers to stream the company's entire line of television shows, documentaries, … Read more

Xbox 360 threat leads to SWAT team raid

This is a public service announcement for anyone playing Call of Duty online on their Xbox 360: if anyone interrupts your game and tells you they're going to hack your information and send a SWAT team to your house, they might actually be serious.

I base this announcement on the tale of a teen in Lewisville, Texas. He was, according to CBS Dallas-Fort Worth, playing "Call of Duty: Black Ops" online on Monday with friends. Suddenly, someone interrupted him in a chat room to give him a message.

"Some dude just popped out of nowhere, and … Read more

Remember who you're talking to on Xbox Live

If you're in a healthy relationship, the last thing you should probably be doing this Valentine's Day is playing video games.

But if you're a "playa" who can juggle Gears of War and a significant other at the same time, be careful when using Microsoft's new wireless headset for the Xbox.

Former UFC champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson learns the hard way in this commercial, which illustrates how things can quickly go from good to embarrassing while using the headset.… Read more

How staying out of the light actually helped The Darkness II

Deciding when to release a video game involves a carefully planned strategy and knowing your competition. At times it feels like a publisher is watching the cards, observing patterns, and learning when to bet.

2K Games pulled some its own crafty rescheduling when the publisher pushed back The Darkness II from its initial fall 2011 release date to February 2012. It was a smart move on 2K's part because had it been delivered on time, it may have got lost in the ether that was an already overcrowded holiday gaming season.

Now I'm not privy to the actual specifics of why it was bumped, but avoiding military-shooter-mageddon 2011 was the right play--mostly because The Darkness II is a great game that deserves its own chance to step into the light.… Read more

Xbox 360 scores huge sales win in January

The Xbox 360 is still scoring big amidst a slump in overall gaming sales.

Microsoft's hot gaming console was the best-selling platform in the U.S. in January, its 13th month in a row at the top of the charts, NPD Group said yesterday.

For January, Microsoft sold 270,000 Xbox 360s,  grabbing 49 percent of the console market last month. The Xbox accounted for $310 million in total sales (hardware, software, and accessories), the highest number for any console in the U.S. January also marked the 11th month in a row in which the Xbox grabbed … Read more
