Correction 5/18: Gracenote was incorrectly listed as a partner of Shazam.
Earlier this week, a company called Tune Hunter accused music-finding service Shazam as well as a host of consumer electronics makers, wireless service operators, and digital music retailers of infringing on its patent on a music identification system.
Shazam is named along with Samsung, Apple, Amazon.com, Napster, Motorola, Gracenote, Verizon Wireless, LG Electronics, AT&T Mobility, and Pantech Wireless in a suit filed Tuesday over U.S. Patent No. 6,941,275, which was issued to Remi Swierczek/Tune Hunter in September 2005. Europeans, rejoice! LG has confirmed that it will be shipping the highly anticipated successor to the LG Viewty (Which we took a closer look at last year's CES), the LG Viewty Smart, later this month. It sports an even better camera than before, with up to ISO 1,600, an "intelligent shot mode" that will automatically adjust camera settings depending on the scene. It retains the same settings as on the original Viewty, like face detection, panorama shot, beauty shot, and so on.
Even more interesting is that LG has announced plans for a 12-megapixel camera phone … Read more
We won't see any variety of this phone stateside, but the LG Cookie has recently released a CDMA version specifically for the Asia-Pacific region.
Dubbed the KX500, it's quite similar to the KP500 Cookie, which is its GSM cousin. Both versions have a 3-inch touch-screen display, a 3-megapixel camera, motion sensor, handwriting recognition, a microSD card slot, and a 3D user interface that looks a lot like HTC's TouchFLO. It has three physical keys underneath the display plus an optional stylus.
While the LG KX500 Cookie is brand new and Asia-only, the LG KP500 Cookie has been … Read more
Like most CNET editors, I get plenty of reader mail asking what products I'm reviewing next, so here's a list of HDTVs I have in-house or, according to the manufacturers, are scheduled for imminent arrival at CNET Labs East. You'll notice a lot of Samsungs on that list. One reason is that Samsung … Read more
LG has finally released a second module for the LG Versa, in the form of a game pad module made for, well, playing games.
As you might recall, the Versa is a unique touch-screen phone with the option of attaching external modules. Previously, the Versa only came with a QWERTY keyboard module, which is handy for messaging and surfing the Web. Now it has this game pad controller, which you can slide on the back of the phone's body for storage when not in use.
Like you would expect, the game pad controller has an eight-way directional pad and … Read more
It has the same textured design as the purple version, and features include a 2-megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, GPS, EV-DO, a music player, and more. Blu-ray players look to have turned a corner this year--until now, they've been overpriced, badly specified, and worst of all, tedious to use. The LG HB354 is the latest to raise the bar, promising to bring a touch of glamour to the proceedings with its attractive styling and impressive features.
Clearly, this system is designed for people who want to de-clutter their lives. While the four-box 2.1 system does add some extra hardware to your home cinema system, it could, in theory, replace a small hi-fi, a DVD player, and a few other bits and bobs. Its iPod dock will appeal to anyone with a compatible device, and could form the basis of a likeable lounge audio system.
Blu-ray profile 2.0 is supported for interactive and online Blu-ray fun. There isn't quite the codec support we've seen on other LG players though--don't expect MKV playback. There is, however, some more basic Xvid and DivX support, as well as MP3s and JPEGs, so all isn't lost. … Read more
