Nokia's new Fold phone

Nokia quietly rolled out its new 3610 flip phone Tuesday. Also called the "Fold" (for obvious reasons), it has a slim design that reminds us of both the Nokia 3555 and 6555. Features are solidly mid-range; inside you'll find a 1.3-megapixel camera, organizer features, text and multimedia messaging, a microSD card slot, and a 262,000-color display.

It should be available in October for about $185. We don't know yet if it will arrive on North American shores, but its quad-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900; EDGE) supports suggests that it might.

Nokia 5610 Xpress Music now at T-Mobile

We've known it was coming for a long time, but only Monday did T-Mobile come clean by announcing the Nokia 5610 Xpress Music. As the big brother to the previously released Nokia 5310 Xpress Music, the 5610 offers an upgraded and music-friendly feature set in a slider design with a brilliant display. Inside you'll find an Xpress Music player, a 3.2-megapixel camera, full Bluetooth with a stereo profile, an FM radio, a microSD card slot, USB mass storage, voice dialing, a speakerphone, and messaging and organizer applications. Unlike the original model, the T-Mobile 5610 doesn't support … Read more

What makes the Nokia N95 a smartphone?: Ask the Editors

Q: I guess I'm missing something, because I don't really see the overwhelming appeal of the Nokia N95. Yes, it has all the radios that we all want, but it's SO big. Also, it has Symbian, which seems about as common as a unicorn.

With its different interface and high price, why do so many editors love it so much? I would expect the iPhone or a BlackBerry model or a Treo model to be ranked higher than the N95 as a smartphone. Wouldn't you call the N95 a feature-phone rather than a smartphone? -- George, … Read more

Cell phone hair dryer headset: Seriously?

I've seen some hair-brained (hey-ooooo) ideas in my time, but this just might take the cake. For those of you who find Bluetooth headsets or the wired headsets that come with your cell phone too pedestrian, here's something that will certainly turn heads: a wired headset that looks like a hair dryer. Trust me, I wish I were making this up.

Yes, for just $7.59, you can talk to your family and friends through a hair dryer and be the object of various onlookers' ridicule envy. The cell phone hair dryer headset comes with various adapters that … Read more

Nokia Tube appears in 'The Dark Knight'?

Warning: this Crave post may contain minor spoilers of the Dark Knight movie.

It is both a curse and a blessing that as an editor who reviews cell phones here at CNET, I have a tendency to notice mobile gadgets in almost every TV show and every movie I come across. And so it was with the recent Batman flick, the Dark Knight, that I noticed a very intriguing touch-screen handset that I've never seen before. Lucius Fox (played by Morgan Freeman) showed this slick-looking Nokia cell phone that was able to send sonar waves in 3D, letting him … Read more

Mobile platform tug-of-war

If you weren't aware, a war--more like a tug-of-war--is happening in the mobile space. The iPhone is quickly rising as the development platform to beat, despite its paltry share of market versus Nokia (Symbian), Java BREW, Blackberry and Microsoft Mobile. In addition, Google's fledgling open-source Android platform is also a challenger to the incumbents.

At a Mobile Web Wars Roundtable held by TechCrunch more than 20 mobile wonks discussed that state of mobile platforms (see the list of participants below). The purpose of the roundtable was to determine which mobile platform is best for developers. The iPhone has … Read more

Down the line: Smartphones

iPhone, schmiPhone. Now wait, don't go calling me an iPhone hater because I'm not. I'm just saying that there are a lot of other hot smartphones out there that deserve as much attention as Apple's starlet, and I've rounded up five of the hottest models.

Whether you're into the BlackBerry Bold or the Samsung Omnia, this group represents some of the most popular and highly anticipated smartphones this year.

I get a lot of reader e-mail wondering about their availability date, pricing, and so on, so I thought I'd try to kill five … Read more

Nokia, Qualcomm settle patent dispute

Nokia, the world's biggest maker of mobile phones, and chipmaker Qualcomm announced on Wednesday that they had signed a licensing agreement settles all patent litigation between the two companies.

Financial terms of the agreement were not released, but the companies said Nokia will pay royalties to Qualcomm for 15 years to license technology that improves performance and battery life, while reducing the size of products. Nokia said it will also withdraw its antitrust complaint against Qualcomm filed with the European Commission.

"We believe that this agreement is positive for the industry, enabling the market to benefit from innovation … Read more
