Sony to launch Sony Entertainment Network? (scoop)

Sony's various content distribution services may soon be operating under a new, unifying name, CNET has learned.

The Japanese electronics giant currently operates several entertainment stores, such as Qriocity, Sony's streaming music and video service; PlayStation Network; and others. Several sources tell CNET that Sony may roll out a new name for those services during IFA 2011 next month in Berlin. That name is currently known within the company as "Sony Entertainment Network," or SEN.

Does this mean people will turn on their PS3s or PSPs one day in the near future and see Sony Entertainment Network instead of PlayStation Network? Not quite. Our sources indicate that Qriocity Music Unlimited and the VOD service would be first to move under the SEN umbrella. Other services would possibly then be moved to SEN later; this may include the PSN and the Reader Store.

A possible reason for the transition, our sources say, is that soon-to-be-chairman Kazuo Hirai desires a unified Sony user experience, as it has been fragmented over the last decade. Hirai oversees all of Sony's consumer electronics, including PlayStation products, so the PSN transitioning to the rubric of SEN seems plausible. It also wouldn't hurt to move away from PSN after the embarrassing hacking scandal that breached millions of accounts and caused service interruption for 23 days. … Read more

Cisco ships dual-band Wireless-N bridge

Cisco announced today the availability of its first dual-band wireless bridge, the Linksys WES610N Wireless-N Dual-Band Entertainment Bridge. This is similar to the TEW-680MB from Trendnet and the DAP-1513 from D-Link.

The WES610N offers four Ethernet ports and can connect to an existing Wireless-N network, either on a 5GHz or 2.4GHz band. This means you can connect up to four nonwireless Ethernet-ready devices to an existing wireless network. The device is designed for home entertainment products, such as TV set-top boxes, game consoles, and other devices that tend to come without built-in wireless adapters.

The new Linksys bridge features … Read more

Audiovox's Android RSE finds a home at Bentley (update: Bentley denies)

Some say that rear-seat entertainment (RSE) systems will go the way of the dodo with the proliferation of cheap tablets. Audiovox, supplier of aftermarket and OEM car electronics, appears to be hedging its bets in the belief that tablets and RSE will somehow merge, with the announcement that it will be shipping an Android-based RSE to Bentley.

We got our first look at what Audiovox's Android-based RSE might look like at CES 2011. The model we saw lacked polish, basically stretching Google's Android 2.1 interface onto a 7-inch touch screen. Time will tell whether the OEM units … Read more

Slip on this hat for a full virtual-reality experience

Would you wear this digital sombrero for a better gaming experience?

Japanese imaging equipment dealer Crescent recently showed off its head-mounted display at the 3D & Virtual Reality Expo (IVR) in Tokyo.

As seen in the vid below, the Immersive Digital Entertainment VR system provides a high-def, 360-degree display showing virtual objects that users can manipulate with their hands. User motions are tracked with high-def motion-capture cameras from Vicon.

The VR experience seems very realistic and smooth. Takahiro Akiyama of collaborator 4D Brain suggests the helmet could also serve as a brain-machine interface and react to what the user is thinking. If BMI technology were incorporated in the device, it might be able to display scenes matching certain brain wave patterns. For instance, a beach when the user is trying to relax.

That would be cool, but the entire concept is dubious. … Read more

Is UltraViolet on track with effort to seed cloud?

While much of Hollywood appears to be helping pave the way for cloud film services, there are still some nagging questions about how much support there is for the technology.

Certainly, lots of people are saying they're on board. Most of the top Hollywood film studios--with the exception of Disney--are part of a consortium that has developed UltraViolet, a set of technical standards they hope will act as the bedrock for the next-generation home video format. UV is designed to ensure that consumers will be able to play their movies and TV shows through a wide range of cloud … Read more

Report: Hulu courting a 'range' of potential suitors

Hulu is planning to hold discussions with a "range" of potential buyers, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Citing anonymous sources, the Journal reported today that Hulu will be meeting with potential suitors "in the coming weeks." However, forces at play within the company might make a sale difficult, the Journal's sources said.

According to the sources, Hulu CEO Jason Kilar is currently having trouble getting his company's owners--ABC, Fox, and NBC Universal--to offer more content to the site. The owners reportedly believe that they can make more money on their content by partnering … Read more

Microsoft and its missed Kinect-ions

It's no secret that Microsoft went all in with Kinect in regards to the future of Xbox 360 last week at E3. While the first part of the company's E3 press conference showed off just a few Xbox 360 games, nearly everything afterward was focused on Kinect's role in the remaining lifespan of the console.

We were mostly underwhelmed with the upcoming Kinect lineup and frankly disappointed in how some games like Star Wars Kinect actually played. Microsoft also appears to be tacking Kinect functionality onto games that arguably don't really need another dimension of control (see Mass Effect 3 and Ghost Recon Future Soldier).… Read more

Mobile devices popular among younger film viewers

Age is playing an important role in how people watch movies, according to a new survey released by Epix.

Epix, a joint venture of Paramount Pictures, MGM, and Lionsgate that offers films through a broadcast channel, video-on-demand, and streaming, found that people between the ages of 25 and 34 are 24 percent more likely to watch movies on iPods than those who are 35 to 64.

These younger viewers are also 21 percent more likely to use tablets and smartphone to enjoy a flick, compared with their older counterparts. Moreover, seven out of eight of all respondents said they watch … Read more
