History, technology of BMW's 328 Roadster

In yesterday's blog, I wrote about the 1937 BMW 328 MM Roadster, a rare classic car that will be up for auction at the RM Auctions' upcoming event in Monaco on May 1. We got a glammed-up look at this collectors' car and learned a little about why this car is much sought after, but I wanted to dig even deeper on what makes this Roadster so significant. With that in mind, today's clip is all about the history and technology behind the making of the famous BMW 328.

This car, conceived in 1936, was designed to be … Read more

Rare BMW 328 MM Bügelfalte Roadster comes to Monaco

I read last week that the BMW Classic Center in Munich was throwing open its doors to work on customer's vehicles, both BMW and otherwise. Thinking that it would make a fun blog topic, I went hunting the Web for video of classic BMWs. In this process I stumbled upon a promotional video for the 2010 Sporting Classics of Monaco event presented by RM Auctions that boasted the presence of one of the most notable and valuable BMWs ever made--the 1937 BMW 328 MM Bügelfalte Roadster.

RM Auctions will be bringing this classic BMW to its first-ever … Read more

One-finger racing

Touch Racing Nitro lets you race around complex tracks with sharp curves, jumps, and obstacles using only one finger to control your car. The game offers a tutorial for learning the one-finger controls, and we recommend starting there first, because it's a little tricky. The two main game modes in Touch Racing Nitro are the Free Racing mode and the Tournament mode. Free racing comes in handy to practice your one-finger driving skills with no time limits and no opponents. But once you start a Tournament, you'll need to race against three computer-controlled opponents and try for the … Read more

Read Marvel comics and race with one finger: iPhone apps of the week

The iPad will be released to the public tomorrow, April 3, but we have one in the building for review purposes today (check out our hands-on review). I had a chance to try a couple of apps out myself and--let me tell you--this thing is something special. Pardon me for a few moments while I exhibit a little breathless fanboyism, but the iPad is truly an experience that you need to try for yourself before making any judgments.

What I noticed right off the bat is that the iPad puts out great sound (along with the large, bright screen), adding … Read more

Open-source innovation: A matter of price?

If human progress can be measured by the number of blades we've managed to fit on a single razor, it's clear we have arrived on a massive scale. Both Gillette and Schick will shortly have a five-blade razor on the market.

Certainly it's progress of some kind, but whether its utility outweighs its cost is another question (and one that Wall Street Journal columnist Neal Templin answers in the negative). It also leaves plenty of room for a one-bladed, disruptive innovator to steal a march on the Gillette/Schick arms race, as Jeff Stibel argues in Harvard … Read more

Zombies, karting, a fiery Frogger, and more: New iPhone games of the week

Except for the much-ballyhooed arrival of Street Fighter IV, it's been a fairly quiet week in iPhone gaming. That said, there's always a steady stream of new and intriguing titles, as evidenced by this decidedly eclectic bunch:

1. Doodle Kart A charming little racing game in the increasingly popular "doodle" style, Doodle Kart offers top-down action across 25 different tracks. Collect power-ups as you go, unlock new stages, and try to beat the AI in all four difficulty levels. Alas, there's no multiplayer, but Doodle Kart offers plenty of fun for one. It's 99 … Read more

Remote computer access and 2D car racing: iPhone apps of the week

The big news of the day is the announcement of when Apple's latest creation, the iPad, will be available. According to Apple, the "magical and revolutionary" product will be in stores April 3 starting at $499, but you can preorder the device as early as March 12. Only the Wi-Fi model will be available at first, with the Wi-Fi/3G capable iPad to come later in April.

There is already plenty of analysis all over the Web about who will buy the iPad and whether it's truly a viable alternative to laptops and Netbooks. Most reviewers … Read more

McMurray wins Daytona 500

The 2010 Nascar season got off to a wild start this month when the Budweiser Shootout practice at Daytona International Speedway was marred by some nasty multicar collisions. That hoopla only stirred the pot that much more for the build-up to the Daytona 500 that took place Sunday. If you're a betting man, the safe money on "who ya got" to win would probably have been Dale Earnhardt Jr., or last year's competition-killer and reigning Nascar champion Jimmie Johnson. But as the Daytona 500 unfolded, we learned that an upset was in the works as Jamie … Read more

Ellison's team wins long-sought sailing trophy

Fulfilling a 10-year ambition, Larry Ellison's sailing team won the America's Cup sailing race Sunday near Valencia, Spain.

The BMW Oracle Racing team used a triple-hulled craft called a trimaran sporting a giant vertical airfoil rather than a conventional sail. The airfoil works on the same principal an airplane wing, only it pushes the boat along through the water while a horizontal wing on a plane lifts the plane up.

"It's absolutely an awesome feeling," Ellison said in a statement. James Spithill, a 30-year-old from Australia, was skipper of the boat; Ellison was listed in … Read more

Multicar crash at Daytona

I'm sure all of you auto racing fans are looking forward to this weekend, as on Sunday, Nascar presents one of the most famous events in modern racing history: the Daytona 500. The action at Daytona International Speedway is already underway with the Budweiser Shootout practice that took place last week, and if you think it was an uneventful precursor to the big race at Daytona this Sunday, then you were wrong. Why? Because Nascar got a start to its 2010 season not with a bang, but with a crunch as multiple cars became entangled in a nasty bang-up … Read more
