Driving through West Hollywood earlier today, I found myself stopped by a gaggle of paparazzi standing in the middle of the road. I'm not sure who they were trying to shoot, but for the first time I kind of understood how they felt. I mean, we here at CNET were all over the Lenovo IdeaPad U110 like a 'razzo on a starlet. First, there was the news that it had arrived in CNET Labs. Then we posted our initial impressions after using the laptop for a day. And finally, the full Lenovo IdeaPad U110 review. But who were we … Read more
The postman brought us a late-afternoon present on this rainy (here in NYC, at least) Friday--the much-anticipated new 9-inch version of the Asus Eee PC netbook-style laptop.
At first glance, it's easy to mistake this for the popular 7-inch version, as the two share a nearly identical footprint. The 9-inch is bigger by maybe a quarter inch, and weighs 2.2 pounds, compared to the original's 2.04 pounds. Opening it up, you can see the display now fills more of the available space, moving the speakers away from the side of the screen.
After Doom 3's less-than-stellar reception from the gaming world, it was safe to say that the franchise that changed gaming forever would be put to sleep. Not every social networking concept strikes gold, even when the coalescing factor is the common interest of finding a good Internet cafe. In the case of WeFi, a hot-spot-finding application with a social community tacked on, various CNET editors have raised a collective eyebrow at some of the more intense methods of attaining human connection, but largely agree that being able to chat with verified friends or nearby Internet surfers adds a useful dimension to the search for reliable Wi-Fi access in comfortable coffee shops.
Regardless of whether you believe in the recession, you have to admit it's looking like lean times in laptop-land, with only a handful of products hitting the market this week.
But sometimes a handful is enough. Gamers will no doubt be satiated by news that the long-awaited Alienware Area-51 m17x is finally available for order, even if its starting price is a wallet-squeezing $2,199. Also for gamers, Asus dished the deets on its 17-inch G70 gaming laptop. Frequent travelers will be psyched that the Lenovo IdeaPad U110, a Best of CES Award winner, is officially available for purchase (… Read more

Dell launched its new flagship gaming rig, the XPS 730 H2C, this morning, which sees the mass-market PC vendor acting like a boutique gaming shop. The system includes high-end touches throughout, from a factory overclocked (a first for Dell) quad-core chip and overclocked memory to a unique cooling system and support for Nvidia SLI and ATI Crossfire graphics. It all adds up to a very interesting and powerful configuration but--surprising for a Dell system--it carries a less than competitive price. Read Rich Brown's in-depth review for the full story. PC Magazine has a review up, too, and had a … Read more
Sony seems to be trying to address those issues at least on the European market with its SRSZX1, which it describes as a "unique high-end 2.0 speaker" for PCs that matches the performance of larger systems. The compact unit yields 40 watts of sound and includes noise-reduction technology while making something of a fashion statement at the same time, encased in "aluminum extrusion molding."… Read more
As this week drew to a close I whipped out my trusty Magic 8 Ball and asked it: "Will there ever be an end to the little-laptop news?" And the Magic 8 Ball replied: "My sources say no."
Those are some reliable sources, because the tiny laptops just kept coming this week. For example, we learned the OLPC XO laptop may switch from Linux to Windows XP. The Asus Eee PC 900, the 9-inch version of everyone's favorite super cheap portable, got an official launch date (May 12) and an official price ($549). Little-known U.… Read more
