Kindle Fire HD: Amazon's anti-Apple profit engine

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos may model his presentation skills after the late Steve Jobs, but his company's business model looks more like the Bizarro version of Apple.

Take today's announcement of several new Kindle Fire tablets, as well as a discounted price on the original. Amazon is hardly making a large profit on these competitively priced products, something Bezos is quick to own up to.

"We want to make money when people use our devices, not when they buy our devices," he said during an event in Santa Monica, Calif., today.

The three versions of the … Read more

Amazon takes aim at Apple's iPad with Kindle Fire HD

In case it wasn't clear enough with the original Kindle Fire, Amazon's got Apple's iPad in its sights. And today Amazon expanded its arsenal.

Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos today showed off three new models of the Kindle Fire, dubbed the Kindle Fire HD, that are clearly aimed at wooing those who might buy a tablet from Apple.

The Amazon assault begins with a new $199, 7-inch model with an HD screen that doubles the built-in storage of the previous entry-level Kindle Fire to 16GB. Amazon has also doubled down on that product line with a larger, … Read more

Amazon delves into book subscriptions with Kindle Serials

Amazon already offers subscriptions to newspapers and magazines, and today the company announced plans to do the same for serial novels.

A new service for Kindle owners, called Kindle Serials, lets customers subscribe to a serial novel. Buyers purchase the content up front, then have it delivered to their device automatically as new installments are published. Along the way, readers can provide feedback about the series, something Amazon hopes will bring a modern approach to the genre.

The feature is launching with eight series, including a yoga murder mystery called "Downward-Facing Death." Each is priced at $1.99, … Read more

Amazon mania: Stock hits all-time high

Shares of Amazon reached an all-time high Thursday as investors bid up the stock in anticipation of the company's announcement of additions to its Kindle tablet line (CNET's live blog of the event starts at 10 a.m.). Amazon's stock is up more than 43 percent for the year. In part, the stock is climbing on the assumption that gross profit margins are going to continue to increase. During Amazon's second quarter, gross profits margins widened to 26.1 percent from 24.1 percent, which surpassed Wall Street's expectations for the company. At least for … Read more

Amazon's Bezos: Maybe the most second-guessed genius in tech

Jeff Bezos is fond of a line that he wrote in a note to Amazon's shareholders in 1997: "We will make bold rather than timid investment decisions where we see a sufficient probability of gaining market leadership advantages."

That's about as good as you'll get it for a one-line summation of the approach adopted by one of the most second-guessed CEOs in the history of the tech industry -- as well as one of its most successful. But investors with short-term horizons haven't been so enamored of a CEO more keen on doing what … Read more

These are not the first rumblings we've heard of Amazon working on a smartphone of its own. The phone will reportedly run a variant of the Kindle Fire Android operating system and challenge the iPhone … Read more

New iPhone facing supply issues

Friday's tech news roundup has a good, long talk with a chair:

Electronics maker Sharp could be having problems making the screens for the next iPhone, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal and Reuters. There could be manufacturing difficulties that are delaying shipments. Sharp is just one of three suppliers for Apple's screens, so it's unclear how this could change launch date expectations or if iPhones will be in limited supply at launch.

We're expecting a new family of Amazon Kindles to be announced on Sept. 6, but images of the Kindle "Paperwhite" have been discoveredRead more
