Microsoft claims to have learned from history, and the primary lesson of its history - at least the Groove Networks history - is that openness is critical. Of course, the road to Hell is paved with good intentions....If it isn't open and easy to connect to, it isn't useful, Moromisato [Microsoft software designer who joined Microsoft through its acquisition of Groove] says. "One of the lessons we learned when working on collaboration at Groove, is that if you try to force people to use all the same technology, they won't have it, and then nobody … Read more
After getting into the limited beta for Microsoft's Live Mesh, blogger Long Zheng wanted to find a way to share the opportunity.
It turns out that each person who gets added to the beta gets to invite a few others, by sharing files with them.
"As soon as I got my own invite, I started thinking of the original 'Gmail invite sharing' Web site and began to build one for Live Mesh," Zheng said on his Istartedsomething blog. "Thus, www.sharemesh.com was born. If you would like a Live Mesh invite or have one to … Read more
Updated at 10:35 a.m. to note that the product has been released.
Microsoft released the latest version of its instant-messaging program for the Mac on Tuesday, though it still continues to trail its Windows counterpart when it comes to features.
The biggest change in Messenger 7 for Mac is the ability for corporate users running Office Communications Server to engage in video and audio chats with one another. For non-corporate users, the biggest changes are the ability to give nicknames to contacts and search within one's list of contacts.
Microsoft declined to offer any update on when … Read more
David Treadwell is the special guest on the Gillmor Gang this week (check out the podcast of the show here). He is the corporate vice president of Microsoft's Live Platform Services, which includes the recently introduced Live Mesh. Treadwell works directly for Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie, who has been working to put the Web, rather than the PC, at the center of Microsoft's computing universe.
Live Mesh is trying to solve a key user problem--how to mesh the desktop, mobile, and the Web for consumers and developers. For example, Live Mesh can provide core underlying infrastructure for … Read more

Check back here for updates from Microsoft's call with financial analysts following their earnings report. We'll be updating this blog as new information comes to light. You can see how they did here.

Samsung announced the BD-P1500 back at CES 2008, but our enthusiasm for it has always been tempered by the fact that the original announcement pegged it as a Blu-ray Profile 1.1 player. Well, Samsung made the BD-P1500 a little more interesting this morning by announcing that the BD-P1500 will be "BD-Live Ready" when it's released in June (pushed back from its original May release date). This means that the BD-P1500 won't be BD-Live (also known as Blu-ray Profile 2.0) capable when it's released, but owners will be able to update the BD-P1500 via … Read more

The key things to look out for are Mac shipments, iPhone momentum, and Apple's forecast for the next quarter, which tends to dictate how the investment community responds to the earnings reports. Reporters are not allowed to ask questions during the calls, only the financial analysts are granted that privilege, which usually means you have to sit through a couple of minutes of "great quarter, guys."
The numbers … Read more
