Newest HP ultrabook faces shipment delays

Hewlett-Packard is having a tough time fulfilling orders for its newest high-end ultrabook.

That would be the Envy Spectre XT, a 13-inch, three-pound, sub-0.7-inch-thick laptop sporting a mostly metal design and Intel's newest "Ivy Bridge" processors.

The model, announced in early May, had been expected to ship as early as June 8 but orders have been backlogged.

"HP Envy SpectreXT orders are taking longer to fulfill than HP expected," an HP spokesperson told CNET. "We are contacting all customers who have placed orders to provide updated expected delivery dates."

Get a 17-inch quad-core laptop for $369.99

What's a warranty worth to you? And how big a warranty do you need to be comfortable buying a laptop?

While you chew on those questions, check this out: Today only, and while supplies last, Woot Tech has the refurbished HP Pavilion G7-1328DX 17.3-inch laptop for $369.99, plus $5 for shipping.

Because it's a refurb, the Pavilion has a fairly standard 90-day warranty. That's usually enough time to determine if, say, the LCD has a bad pixel or the system has a sudden-reboot problem.

For sake of comparison, Best Buy sells the Pavilion G7-1328DX new for $429.99 shipped (… Read more

HP-backed Enyo 2 app framework exits beta

Hewlett-Packard announced this week that Enyo 2, the second version of framework formerly used exclusively for building WebOS apps, has exited beta and is available for developer use.

While the first version of Enyo was focused on HP's failed TouchPad tablet, the new iteration can be used to build apps for iOS, Android, Safari, Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer.

"We see a web-centric future in which there aren't iOS apps, Android apps, Mac apps and Windows apps -- there are just apps: apps that let you access your content and get stuff done, wherever you happen to … Read more

Lenovo poised to surpass HP as top PC maker, say analysts

The PC market may see a new leader by the end of the year, says at least one analyst quoted by Reuters.

Currently in second place, Lenovo is set to overtake Hewlett-Packard as the top seller, making it the first Chinese vendor to grab the No. 1 spot in a key technology sector.

"It's just a matter of time before Lenovo becomes No. 1 and it won't be surprising at all if it happens later this year," Frederick Wong, executive director at Avant Capital Management (Hong Kong), told Reuters.

PC shipments continue downward trend

Worldwide PC shipments are down 0.1 percent from last year, signaling the PC market's seventh consecutive quarter of little to no growth, according to analyst reports.

Though HP continued to be at the top of the heap, its global shipments declined by about 12 percent, according to reports from research firms Gartner and IDC. Worldwide shipments totaled 87.5 million units in the second quarter of 2012.

Among vendors, Apple was the only one to see a growth in shipments. Its 12 percent share of the market this year meant the company's shipments grew 4.3 percent, … Read more

New HP all-in-ones: high-end dreams, big-screen value

You'd be forgiven for feeling puzzled by the branding of HP's newly announced Envy 23 all-in-one. Not because it's strange that HP might want to expand the Envy line to a desktop. It's just unclear why it's this desktop, rather than its 27-inch Omni all-in-one, which inspired HP to extend the generally well-regarded Envy moniker.… Read more

Windows 8, Surface to squeeze PC unit sales in Q3, analyst says

PC unit sales could fall as much as 5 percent to 10 percent in the third quarter from a year ago, according to Jefferies analyst Peter Misek's latest research note, published late last night.

Misek sees a troublesome time ahead for PC builders following a single-digit drop in PC shipments in the second quarter, particularly with Dell and Hewlett-Packard.

The report comes after he estimates what was a low drop in second-quarter PC shipments.

It also follows only a month after the two PC makers saw their target prices cut with analysts suggesting: "Windows 8 will prove to … Read more

Again, Apple gets all the attention

So, why does the world obsess about the newest MacBook Pro and not competing laptops from Hewlett-Packard or Dell?

Let's just say that Apple has an innate sense about good design.

And you can bet Microsoft has uttered this sentiment behind closed doors more than a few times -- thus, the Microsoft-designed Surface tablet announcement this week.

But let's focus on the Retina MacBook Pro for now. That's a design that any PC maker could have feasibly done.
