Newer versions of Chrome spruce up the New Tab page by adding some shortcuts to your most-visited Web sites or Chrome apps. A previous extension I wrote about, New Tab Page adds the weather, some headlines, and links to Chrome apps. Onefeed does all of this, plus a custom newsfeed and social media updates from Facebook, Google+, Twitter, and Instagram. You can also attach your Dropbox account, if you really want to.
Google sent out an invitation to a breakfast meeting with new Android head Sundar Pichai like it was calling up its buddies. Naturally, it's not all about pancakes and orange juice. There could be a juicy Android update of some kind tucked in between the waffles.
On the hardware front, there's plenty of anticipation that Google will finally unveil a successor to the Nexus 7 tablet. Pichai is also in charge of Chrome, so a new Chromebook isn't out of the question.
Chrome users who want to open their Web apps without having to first fire up the browser can do just that via the Chrome App Launcher for Windows.
Initially released in February as a developer preview, the App Launcher now is finished and in completed build mode for Windows users.
To grab the App Launcher, open Google Chrome and surf to the launcher link in the Web store. Click on the button to Get the launcher. The App Launcher icon then appears on your Windows taskbar and desktop. Close Chrome. Now, anytime you want to open one of your Chrome … Read more
Google is continuing its efforts to replace the core apps on iOS devices with the latest Chrome for iOS update.
Beyond the ability to browse Web pages in full-screen, users can now set Chrome to open Google-related links in other Google apps by default. So when you tap on an address while using Chrome, Google Maps will launch with that location plotted on the map. In the past Chrome would have directed you to the Web version of Google Maps.
To set Chrome for iOS to launch these apps … Read more
Dear Mr. Pichai,
My colleagues inform me that you've been sending out invitations to a soiree next week to chat about Android and such. I'm sure my invite is sitting in my mailbox back in New Mexico, but unfortunately my summer travel plans prevent me from being able to attend/crash your fine event.
Nonetheless, seeing as how you're new to this gig from Google's Chrome unit and you seem to be working to get up to speed quickly, I thought I'd send along one simple request as a long-term part-time resident of the Google ecosystem:
Please give me the amenities I need to become a full-timer. … Read more

A day after iOS users got a revamped Google Maps app, an update of Google's Chrome Web browser began rolling out to Apple devices on Wednesday.
The update features tighter integration with other Google apps, allowing users to automatically sign in to other Google services after signing in to Chrome. Users also now have the option of setting preferences to open links within Google apps such as Google Maps, Google+, and YouTube instead of in the browser.
The update also allows users to access their browsing history from the browser menu as well as full-screen browsing for iPad users. … Read more
If you use Chrome on your iPhone or iPad and have stumbled across an iTunes link, then you've encountered a wall of text when you tapped on that link. Next, you likely copied the link and returned to the waiting arms of Safari to open it. Thanks to Amit Agarwal on his blog, Digital Inspiration, I now know a simple way to open iTunes links in Chrome for iOS.
When greeted with that wall of text, which is just the HTML code for the iTunes page in question, tap what Amit amusingly calls the Hamburger button that sits just … Read more
Google Chrome engineers have rained on the parade of Google engineers who want to promote the animated WebP graphics format as an alternative to animated GIF images.
Darin Fisher, engineering leader for the Google Chrome team, turned down a proposal to build animated WebP images into Chrome's Blink browser engine. In a mailing list message Tuesday night, he said skeptical Chrome engineers hadn't been convinced of the performance merits:
It's not clear that we are ready to ship Animated WebP.
For instance, it seems that Animated WebP is trying to be an improvement over Animated GIF, but...… Read more
Searching through your browser history for that one article you read that one time is a painful, often fruitless exercise. With Chrome extension cottonTracks, your browser history is organized by subject, making it easier to drill down to a particular article you read in the past.
After installing, cottonTracks places a small "C" button to the right of Chrome's URL bar and immediately gets to analyzing your browsing history. You do not need to create an account or log-in, and the developers state that the extension is 100-percent private -- everything stays on your machine.
