Gaming holiday gift picks

Everyone has a gamer on their list this holiday season, so make sure to give my gaming guide a close look when choosing the right gift.

While Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 remain as the two dominating consoles, there's still a few titles for Nintendo platforms I recommend, including games for the 3DS, which has finally gotten some quality software in recent weeks.

After you've checked out my picks for games on each console, be sure to visit my accessories guide as well for gift ideas for the gamer who already has all the top titles!

Finally, if you're starting from scratch, I've updated my console buying guide for anyone who's just first getting into gaming this season. … Read more

Black Friday deals you can get right now

If you're hearty enough to drag yourself out of bed in the middle of the night, stand in long, cold lines, and fight deal-crazed crowds, just to score a superlow price on a laptop, hard drive, or whatever, I salute you.

Quick housekeeping note: I'm off tomorrow (Happy Turkey Day, everyone!), but I'll be back on Friday. And Saturday. And Sunday! So if you have the time, I hope you'll pop in for some sweet weekend deals.

If, on the other hand, you prefer to sleep in, spend time with your family, and avoid potential stampedes, … Read more

Apple's Black Friday: $101 off Macs, up to $61 off iPad 2?

Apple's Black Friday plans have apparently been leaked, and if they prove true, there might not be much to write home about.

According to 9to5Mac, it has received a "pamphlet" from a "trusted tipster" showing all of Apple's Black Friday sales. That pamphlet shows Apple cutting the price of its MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and iMac lines by $101. In addition, the company apparently will be cutting the price of the iPod Touch by $21 to $41, depending on the model customers choose. The iPod Nano would get an $11 price cut and the … Read more

Nook Touch 'limited edition' $79 on Black Friday

The picture says it all on this one.

On Black Friday, Barnes & Noble will be selling its highly-rated Nook Simple Touch for $79. That's a $20 price drop and matches the price of Amazon's entry-level non-touch, ad-supported Kindle With Special Offers. The Nook Simple Touch has no ads.

The company is calling it a "Limited Edition," and while it doesn't seem any different from the $99 model that's on sale now, on second glance the border/edging is white instead of black (the new color scheme has been confirmed by Barnes & Noble). … Read more

Black Friday apps for the big screen

Black Friday is almost here, and if you're the type who likes to avoid the shopping rush like the plague, I may have the perfect collection of iPad apps for you.

Instead of getting up early and waiting in crowded lines for the doors to open, how about sitting on your couch with an iPad and a cup of coffee, and getting your holiday shopping done in peace? It's true that you probably won't get the super mega deals found by doing the leg work at your local retail outlet, but you'll also run zero risk of being trampled by overexcited shoppers.

While this collection is focused on the iPad (simply because it's easier to see the items you're buying), you could just as easily get any of these apps for smaller iOS devices.… Read more

Apple teases Black Friday deals, but what about the iPhone?

Apple is planning Black Friday discounts again this year.

The company today put a teaser on its site, saying that it will be holding a "special one-day Apple shopping event" on Friday. Reading between the lines, we take that to mean discounts. Apple lists the iPad, iPod, and Mac as gift ideas. It made no mention of the iPhone.

As MacStories points out, it appears Apple will be offering the deals worldwide. As of this writing, the Black Friday deal teaser is being displayed on Apple's Australia, Italy, and U.K. online stores.

There are a few … Read more

How to use Yipit on your iPhone

Just in time for Black Friday and the holiday-shopping season to follow, Yipit has released an iOS app that aggregates offers from Groupon, Living Social, and over 800 other daily deals sites. Like most daily deals sites, the Yipit app works best if you live in a major metro area. The app is free, however, and lets you select categories so that you get a manageable list of deals to sift through.

After you launch the app, it'll ask you to allow it to know your location. If you allow it, you won't have to then select your city (or the nearest large city) from the list. In my case, I'm located in Concord, NH, and the closest city to me that Yipit listed was Boston. (One reason I signed up for Living Social is that it has a Southern New Hampshire category, which will occasionally surface a deal in my town or the surrounding area.)… Read more
