MacBook Pro with Retina Display ships in '2-3 weeks'

Apple's MacBook Pro with Retina Display stole the show at yesterday's Worldwide Developers Conference. But the contention by Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, that the computer would ship immediately doesn't seem to be the case at the moment.

Customers heading over to Apple's Web site today will find that the MacBook Pro with Retina Display is listed as shipping in two to three weeks. During his presentation at WWDC yesterday, Schiller told those in attendance that the computer would start shipping yesterday.

It's not immediately clear if the delay is … Read more

Apple shows some love for photo and video pros

As a replacement for the top-of-the-line MacBook Pro that a lot of pro video and photo editors use, the MacBook Pro with Retina Display may sound mighty tasty. Faster innards, with a high-resolution, high-contrast 15.4-inch display and all the essential ports -- as long as you're willing to possibly have to waste one of the two essential Thunderbolt ports with dongles for FireWire and Ethernet -- at a lighter 4.5 pounds is a potentially winning combination if you've been schlepping around one of the older, heavier models. On the downside, still a glossy screen, though Apple claims less glare.… Read more

Apple beefs up new MacBook Airs with Ivy Bridge, from $999

Apple's new MacBook Airs are getting a dose of Ivy Bridge and a few other upgrades, but no Retina Display.

Announced at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference today, the new MacBook Airs will be equipped with the latest Intel Ivy Bridge chips, offering up to a 2.0 Ghz dual-core i7 processor. But the added Turbo Boost can bump the processor speed up to 3.2GHz.

Apple launches new MacBook Pros with Ivy Bridge, from $1,199

Apple today launch its new MacBook Pro line.

Announced at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference keynote, the new MacBook Pros will boast third-generation Ivy Bridge processors and the Nvidia GeForce GT650M graphics. The line also includes both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 support

Unlike Apple's next-generation MacBook Pro, its 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pros don't come with the Retina display. Instead, the 13-inch version boasts 1,280 x 800 resolution, and comes with the 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor. The 15-inch MacBook Pro offers a larger 1,440 x 900 display and starts … Read more

Expect iOS 6, new MacBooks at Apple conference Monday

In today's show, we look into the Apple crystal ball, get hit with more apps and save up for new games:

Apple will be highlighting new products at its annual Developer's Conference Monday. Expect computers to get Intel's new processors, and we'll likely hear about new 3D maps on iOS 6 and other mobile system upgrades.

Some have said laptops could get retina display, which is found on iPhones and iPads. That seemed pretty improbably, until recently. An application for Macs has been updated to support retina graphics. That raised a few eyebrows.

The presentation kicks … Read more

What I'd like to see in Apple's next MacBooks

The looming presence of a WWDC keynote doesn't usually spark dreams of laptop hardware, but this year's a little different. Apple hasn't released a MacBook in all of 2012. It's already June. And, Intel's latest Ivy Bridge processors have been showing up everywhere, including a bumper crop of new Windows ultrabooks.

Here's what I'd like to see in Apple's next MacBooks, both from software and hardware. … Read more

Mac app updated with 'Retina graphics,' adds fuel to rumors

All of the talk surrounding the possibility of Apple launching MacBooks with Retina Displays just got a bit more serious.

A Mac OS X-based application today was updated with support for "Retina graphics." The app, FolderWatch, allows users to automatically keep a copy of a project on an external hard drive or file server. It might not be the most obvious choice for a Retina-ready app, but the very fact that it supports the feature is rather interesting.

For months now, we've been hearing rumors that Apple could launch a new line of MacBooks featuring the Retina … Read more

Add an extra monitor to your computer

I hesitated writing this How To. Compared with the olden days of installing and configuring video cards and giant CRT displays, the process of adding a secondary monitor to any modern computer is practically plug-and-play.

But when I sat down to write a tutorial on this that included both Mac and PC, I realized there's still a surprising amount of variables to the process, and plenty of details that I hadn't considered before.

"Is VGA video quality inherently worse than HDMI?"

"Will generic Mini DisplayPort cables work in a Mac's Thunderbolt port?"

Diptic adds photo filters for even better collages on iOS

By now, just about anyone with an iPhone or iPad probably has a ton of images sitting in his or her image library. Most people already know about photo-sharing apps like Instagram and EyeEm, along with photo filter apps like PhotoToaster and FX Photo Studio for that stylized look, but there are still more fun ways to play with your images to produce nice-looking projects.

Diptic (99 cents) is an intuitive app that lets you make cool-looking collages using photos you take with your iPhone camera or what you have stored in your photo library. A new version of the app now adds photo filters and other options, letting you create simple but elegant collages in only a few easy steps.… Read more
