Can't come up with any awesome ideas? Here, try this

Ever wish you could come up with the next big thing? The Directors' Bureau's Idea Generator can help you out. It's a Flash app that will tell you how to make a million dollars by randomly choosing a set of words that comprise a potential "idea."

Let's overlook the fact that I wound up with "erotic rubber appliance." Then I re-spun and was given "scary paper book." Okay, now I think we're getting somewhere.

Tesla wins IDEA award

Nikola Tesla may not have gotten proper due for his alternating-current system, but his namesake is still garnering attention for being alternative.

The Tesla just won an IDEA (International Design Excellence Award) in the category of Ecodesign. The electric sports car that can go 250 miles on a single charge and do zero to 60 in four seconds was praised by the committee for being attractive, as well as efficient.

It praised Tesla's designers for avoiding the temptation to make the revolutionary car look futuristic. Instead, said the team, the car invokes a nostalgia and beauty that puts people … Read more

Before you blush, call HP

Color matching and management is a serious technology hurdle for retailers, online and off. Navy blue is frequently indistinguishable from black in stores, rust-colored shirts ordered online turn out to be bright orange when you open the box and that seafoam green paint that looked so good on the chip makes your living room look like a kelp bed.

These are not the problems that HP Labs announced it has addressed with its new color-matching technology.

No, HP Labs sent out a press release touting its ability to base cosmetics recommendations on your cameraphone self-portrait, and seeking business partners who … Read more

PS3 price cut isn't going to last?

On Monday, Sony announced a $100 price cut for the 60GB PlayStation 3, taking the console's retail price down to $499. Since many gamers saw the PlayStation 3 as too expensive at its previous retail price of $599, Sony's decision was widely praised. Unfortunately, the $499 60GB PS3 isn't going to last, because Sony has just confirmed that the company is no longer producing 60GB PS3s.

On the same day the price cut was announced, Sony announced a new 80GB PS3, a console that will be bundled with Motorstorm and will retail for $599, the same as … Read more

What Top 5 do YOU want to see?

CNET Top 5 is one of the most fun video projects I've ever worked on. Different lists get different levels of interest. Everybody seems to love the Most Wanted list, so we do that once a month. Worst downloads is also possible. But what other lists would you like to see? Post your ideas here in the comments and let me know.

If you haven't seen a Top 5, or you want to watch one again for inspiration, see the last one we posted on search terms.

Dumb Ideas Club: Livemansion makes a movie through social networking

Can you imagine a MySpace: The Movie, full of self-promoting emo kids, strippers, and dirty old men? How about LinkedIn: The Movie, with a cast of social-climbing tools who love to pass around business cards at parties? Yeah, not such awesome ideas. Which is why I'm beyond skeptical of the potential for Livemansion: The Movie, a movie created by entertainment and acting social networking site Livemansion, to be any kind of success.

My point is this: American Idol might still be hot, but there are some things in the entertainment world that probably shouldn't be left up to … Read more

Human-powered roller coaster, welcome to the Dumb Ideas Club

This really takes the stupidity cake. Looking at the first few pictures, I thought the "Skycycle" in Okayama, Japan, was a sort of bike-ride-meets-skyway. You know, something that you could pedal around on at a nice, leisurely pace to get a birds' eye view of sights on the ground. But, no. It's a roller coaster. You get on it, and you pedal, and you go wheeeeeee.

This is scary for a number of reasons. Okay, so it might be eco-friendly because it's all done by manpower. But personally, I like my roller coasters to be automated. … Read more

Texting for tots

Sometimes, when parental fogyism gets the better of us, we just have to ask why. Why, for example, would you want to encourage a child to learn text messaging before they need to? Won't they be retreating to their secluded corners with device in hand soon enough?

Mattel apparently wants to accelerate adolescent isolation by introducing the $65 "IM-Me," kind of a training-wheels version of a texting phone or SMS device that we spotted on Gadgets Weblog. About the only good thing we can see is that it doesn't require a two-year contract, working instead only … Read more
