GIMP began life in the 1990s as the GNU Image Manipulation Program, and the free, open-source image editing tool has evolved in both complexity and ease of use alongside the personal computer, itself. The latest version, GIMP 2.8, maintains the program's legacy as a powerful and up-to-date, yet totally free image editor. GIMP is modular in appearance and structure and accepts all kinds of plug-ins and tools. It's a paint and drawing tool, a photo retoucher, and a batch processing and conversion tool, all in one, with sophisticated features like layers, filters, and effects. You can script … Read more
Photo Secret is a straightforward password-protection system for your photo albums, and it works quite well for what it offers. Using the built-in pin code method of password protection that comes with iOS 6, Photo Secret makes it relatively easy to add images from your photo library or camera to the protected folders of the app, while also giving you access to an internal Web browser from which you can download images to your device and password protect them.
The first thing Photo Secret does after installation is require you to enter and verify your password. This is important because … Read more
Photo Mess is a surprisingly easy-to-use, effective app that offers a digital cork board to pin your photos, stickers from the app, and other effects before sharing with friends. While it doesn't offer a lot of features and the interface is incredibly stripped down, the effect is fun and efficient, a useful tool for someone who wants to share a number of photos together in a single place.
When you open Photo Mess for the first time, there are three options -- add images to the board, remove images from the board, or upload and share your board to … Read more
Photo Grid Collage Maker seems at first like another collage making app, but with a few clever design choices it stands out from the pack in a number of ways. Because it automates much of the process, offers quick and very responsive formatting tools, and it is free, the app is a very useful tool for anyone that wants to make a collage but doesn't want to do the hard math required by so many other apps.
When starting the app, your first option is to choose photos, not the frame. You can go through your photo library or … Read more
Photo Album is designed to provide an added layer of protection for your photos while offering a streamlined album creation system, but it tends to create more steps with minimal reward. With an awkward design and cumbersome interface, the system here is frustrating at times, and feels unnecessary at others. While there are a handful of things it does that are very welcome, the vast majority of the "new" features offered by Photo Album are just extra steps.
The biggest hurdle to using Photo Album is the lack of direction. When you first open the app, you can … Read more
Modern smartphones have pretty decent cameras, but their Achilles' heels continue to be low-light environments. Their tiny built-in LEDs tend to wash out subjects and add horrific red-eye.
Kickstarter project iBlazr adds a synchronized four-LED flash to Android phones and iPhones, meaning your nighttime selfies, heavily backlit group shots, and other close-up photos should look a lot better. And if you like to snap photos with your iPad, you've finally got a light to go with it.… Read more
Twitter has made over its Web search to return photos and accounts in search results, the information network announced Thursday.
The updates also mean that people will find a smarter search bar when they visit Twitter.com and start typing their queries. Twitter's Web search bar now exposes recent searches and highlights the follow relationship between users and suggested results, something the company refers to as "social context."
Thursday's improvements put Twitter's Web search on par with its mobile search, and provide users with enough additional context and content that they might stick around longer … Read more

There are many photo storage services available out there competing for the right to hold our digital memories. Apps like Instagram and Flickr were designed to make sharing photos online easier but were not specifically designed for private storage. Cloud depositories like Dropbox or Google Drive work amazingly well with documents and spreadsheets but not with images or movies. Loom comes onto the scene with a fantastic app to tackle a specific problem in a great way.
The Loom app automatically uploads all of your photos and videos from your iPad and iPhone to be shared interchangeably. The Web and … Read more
Dynamic Photo Free creates custom screensavers from your photo library using one of a handful of special effects built into the app. The effects aren't particularly mind-blowing, but when combined with transition options and a large photo library it can be a fun screensaver alternative for your iPad.
After installation of Dynamic Photo Free, you can see the effects in action with a handful of stock photos that come with the app. Click on the settings tab and you can then replace those with your own images. They integrate directly into your system and start playing immediately, so the … Read more
