A Weekend With the Camera

Back from my mini-trip down to Southern California for the weekend and I certainly made heavy use of my phone while down there. One of the main ways was as my surrogate camera. I made the conscious decision to leave behind my Canon for this trip and see what it would be like to rely solely on the Palm Pre for any photo opportunities.

I have to say, that it performed admirably at this task. One thing I did run into was that I started getting tired of lightly smudging my screen with my fingers having to press the touch … Read more

Pre, Meet Ford

On Tuesday I'll be attending the Ford 2010 Model Year Drive Event in Dearborn, MI. I'll be counting on my Palm Pre to not only keep me connected to my family and clients, but also to help capture the event and share it in real time, via Whrrl.

That means I'll be counting on the Pre's battery to last from 12 noon till at least 5pm under some pretty heavy use. Of course I'll be using it throughout the day as well.

Other things I plan to put the test are airplane mode (Dallas to … Read more

Microsoft axes Live Search Product Upload

Microsoft has made the decision to ax Live Search Product Upload, a tool retailers could use to get their products into Microsoft's search database.

"Thank you for your interest in the product upload beta. Regrettably, we are discontinuing this program," Microsoft said in a message posted on the product's Web site. "Merchants located in the United States should consider participating in Live Search Cashback--an advertising program which combines the power of Live Search with a comparison shopping engine to bring consumers some of the best deals on the web."

Pixelpipe adds drag-and-drop uploading to Firefox

Pixelpipe, the multi-service file uploader and metadata management tool, has a new experimental Firefox extension out that should delight its regular users. It adds a sidebar to your browser where you can simply drag and drop digital media from your hard drive or things you find on the Web to upload directly to your Pixelpipe account.

Once you've picked all the items you want to upload, you hit a single button and it sends it off to Pixelpipe, which will instantly distribute it to all the services you have turned on by default. These can't be edited right … Read more

Shrunked resizes images before you upload them

Ever been stuck waiting, and waiting, and waiting some more for photos to upload? Short of getting a faster connection there's not much you can do with big image files. You can go the software route, and download something free and simple like Paint.net to do the resizing pre-upload, but you don't always have time to do this with every shot, and if you're like me you're kind of lazy.

Enter Shrunked, a great new extension for Firefox. It lets you resize a photo before uploading it. It works anywhere that doesn't use a … Read more

Picasa's Mac uploader now downloads too

Google's latest version of its software-based Picasa uploader for Mac has a handy new trick up its sleeve. It now lets you download entire albums back to your computer, making it a simple tool for backing up large photo libraries.

The Windows and Linux version of Picasa have allowed you to do this for some time, but seeing as Mac users do not (yet) have a version of Picasa to call their own, this is a far better option than downloading the originals one at a time from the Web, or having to use third-party programs.

I gave it … Read more

Eye-Fi celebrates one year with 4GB camera card

Eye-Fi, the maker of camera storage cards that can also beam photos directly to a computer or Web site via Wi-Fi, on Wednesday celebrated its first anniversary with a new special-edition product.

It's called the Eye-Fi Anniversary Edition, and it offers 4GB of storage space for $129.

Like other cards, the new card wirelessly sends photos from a digital camera to a computer and to one of more than 25 online photo-sharing sites. However, it doesn't come with one year of hot-spot service, as found in the existing 2GB Eye-Fi Explore card.

Eye-Fi's product line includes the … Read more

YouTube streamlines its video uploader, bumps size limits

Over the weekend YouTube quietly began testing a new uploading tool for users to publish their videos. The tool now allows users to begin plugging in information fields about the video while the upload is happening, much like Viddler, Vimeo, and others have offered for years. The company is testing the new player with a small number of its users, although you can access it with a special link.

The company has also increased the size limit of uploaded video files from 100MB to 1GB. This should open things up dramatically for people who are shooting in high-quality VGA video … Read more
