Google fixes Gmail iOS app but users still critical

Google's latest update to its Gmail iOS app fixes a glitch in the first version, but many users are still giving the app a collective thumbs-down over its limited functionality.

Released yesterday, the new 1.0.2 version of Gmail for iOS squashes the original bug that broke notifications and displayed an error message upon launch. The update also sizes images from HTML messages so that they properly fit the screen.

Users still running the original version are advised to uninstall or at least log out of it before installing the new version.

The app now launches smoothly without … Read more

Google: 200 million Android devices now active worldwide

Google's grip on the mobile market is tightening even further.

More than 200 million Android devices have now been activated around the world, the search giant said yesterday. The figure was released yesterday at an event where the company unveiled its new Google Music service.

That level is more than double the number noted this past May at Google's I/O conference. Further, more than 550,000 devices are being activated every day, according to Engadget, up from a daily tally of 500,000 in June and 400,000 in May.

The new number also means that Google … Read more

How to enable cellular playback for iTunes Match

If you subscribed to iTunes Match and got the service set up and running on an iOS device, there might be one more step required before you find yourself rocking out from the cloud.

Yesterday, I got iTunes Match set up, but I did so while all my devices were on my home Wi-Fi network. Today, I ventured to my local bagel shop and tried connecting to iTunes Match from my iPhone. When I tapped on a track to begin playing an album, I received an abrupt message: Cannot Play. It instructed me to connect to Wi-Fi network or enable cellular playback in Settings. Enable cellular playback? This was not a setting with which I was familiar.… Read more

Another iOS 5 update to address battery issues?

Apple could be rolling out another iOS 5 update in the next week or so to try again to fix the battery issues with the iPhone 4S, according to reports.

Apple updated its mobile operating operating system to 5.0.1 last week, which apparently fixed the battery drain issues for some iPhone 4S owners, while others complained the problem was unchanged or even worsened in some cases.

Now German site Macerkopf quotes an unnamed Apple engineer saying that another update, 5.0.2, will be out by the end of next week.… Read more

Once-buggy Gmail app for iOS returns to the App Store

After what can only be described as a poor start for Google's much-anticipated Gmail app for Apple's iOS platform, the software has returned.

The app, which was released earlier this month and then yanked almost immediately, had a bug that Google said broke notifications. It also served up an error message the first time users fired it up.

"We've fixed the bug and notifications are now working, and the app is back in the App Store," wrote Matthew Izatt, Gmail's product manager in a post this morning.

Izatt added that the app has also … Read more

BTServer may cause CPU spikes for some iOS developers

If you develop applications for Apple's iPhone or iPad, you may run into an issue where the Mac you're working on may start lagging or even lock up. If this happens, checking Activity Monitor may show the process BTServer running in the background.

For some people experiencing this problem, their Macs start running slower with the fans blaring at high speed, but for others the system crawls to a halt, requiring a forced reset of the system.

In order to properly test iOS applications, Apple includes an iOS simulator in its XCode package that is regularly used to … Read more

Android smartphone share more than triples iOS in Q3

If there was ever a period of time that showed Android's dominance over the smartphone space, it was last quarter.

During the three-month period that ended September 30, 60.5 million Android-based smartphones shipped worldwide, helping the mobile operating system secure 52.5 percent of the market, research firm Gartner revealed today. In just one year, Android has more than doubled its market share; in the third quarter of 2010, Android's share stood at 25.3 percent. Furthermore, Android smartphone shipments for the quarter just about tripled from the 20.5 million that hit store shelves in the … Read more
