Difficult genealogy tool

IN-HEH Timeline offers to help organize a family tree by creating a time line of people and events. While its aim is not uncommon, its confusing setup and total lack of direction stall this program before it ever begins.

The program's interface was our first clue that things would be difficult. Dissected into separate stark white boxes with many commands that don't make sense, it mandated a retreat to the Help file. Unfortunately, there was no Help file, just technical product information. We soldiered on, experimenting with the program in hopes of creating a timeline. The program allowed … Read more

Attractive education scheduler

School Calendar is an attractive program that allows users to track multiple school schedules. Although we liked its design, we had trouble getting a sense of who the program is made for and how it could be most effectively used.

At its heart, School Calendar is similar to many other scheduling applications we've seen, with a variety of different calendar views, the ability to schedule reminders, and so on. The program's interface is quite sleek and is reminiscent of Office 2007 products; our first impression was positive. Once we started exploring School Calendar, however, we got a little … Read more

Music learning tool

Songtrix Silver offers to help newcomers and experienced musicians alike. With options to learn and create music, this program offers something to everyone.

Initially, we were overwhelmed by the various musical players, scales, and more that the program offers. Luckily, a series of short tutorials in the Help file gave every tool a clear role. Not being experienced musicians, we liked having the ability to choose a song from the collection and follow it note for note on a scale or on the screen's light-up keyboard. We felt that some prior understanding of notation would be necessary, but this … Read more

Video roundup: Jobs, new iPods take the Apple stage

Our cameras were rolling Wednesday morning at Apple's San Francisco press conference as the company played up iTunes 9, iPod price cuts, games for the Touch, a video camera for the iPod Nano, and much more.

But the real spotlight was on Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who made his first public appearance since returning from medical leave after receiving a liver transplant earlier this year.

New iTunes LP format is live

I'm following Apple's "It's Only Rock and Roll" event along with the CNET staff, but even before the event started, I saw that Apple has revealed its new LP format for iTunes.

It's called iTunes LP, and you can access it by clicking the top item on the "More to Explore" box in the left side of the iTunes Store front page. The new format includes more album art, lyrics, writing about the record, video (such as interviews with band members), and perhaps additional songs.

There are only a handful of albums … Read more

It's official: Apple event set for 09/09/09

As expected, Apple has officially confirmed that it will host an event next Wednesday, September 9.

Invitations went out Monday. The music-themed event in San Francisco will be held at 10 a.m. at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, which is next door to Moscone Center, where Apple's much-larger Worldwide Developers Conference takes place every June.

Based on the image of the classic iPod advertisement art and the tag line, "It's only rock 'n roll, but we like it," this will be the company's annual music-focused event. Apple has hosted a new product … Read more
