AT&T to acquire Wi-Fi network provider Wayport

Correction: This post incorrectly stated the number of hot spots Wayport would contribute to the AT&T network, as well as the overall pricing for use of those hot spots. Including Wayport, AT&T will now operate approximately 20,000 hot spots in the United States, free only to customers of certain plans.

AT&T announced plans on Thursday to acquire Wi-Fi network provider Wayport in a $275 million cash deal.

The acquisition will expand AT&T's network of U.S. hot spots, adding locations at hotel chains such as Wyndham, Marriott Vacation Club, and … Read more

Featured Freeware: HotKeyz

A few days ago we featured gMote, an excellent utility for creating mouse gestures. Some people aren't into them, and would prefer to keep their hands on their keyboards as much as possible. Heck, I'm one of them. HotKeyz does for those essential multikey combinations what gMote does for mouse gestures: it's a powerful utility that makes it easy to create and manage hot keys that open programs, shut down your computer, and control media applications.

HotKeyz's intuitive interface divides hot keys into nine preset categories, including Control Panel, Desktop, and Internet. A simple table lists … Read more

Buzz Out Loud 842: Forking Google

Google has joined the OpenID crowd, but just like Microsoft and Yahoo, you can't use the OpenID on Google, but you can use Google credentials other places. Unlike Microsoft and Yahoo though, Google has decided to tweak the OpenID implementation a little to make it better. That means that it's nonstandard and won't work for all standards-compliant OpenID servers. Bullies. We also admire the new DRM-free music store from clothing retailer, Hot Topic. Really.

AT&T's Free iPhone WiFi: Starbucks and other hot spots

Earlier today, AT&T issued the following text message to its iPhone-using subscribers:

"AT&T Free Msg: Your Apple iPhone new has free AT&T Wi-Fi access at thousands of hotspots nationwide, including Starbucks. For info visit www.att.com/attwifi

This announcement ends the drama surrounding the months of speculation regarding the premature free Wi-Fi announcements that kept popping up on AT&T's various websites and teasing iPhone users everywhere. It also removes any doubts about the participation of Starbucks. This also ends recent speculation that this announcement was delayed due to lack … Read more

Hot Topic launches DRM-free music service

Hot Topic, a clothing and accessories retailer catering to those interested in alternative music, announced Wednesday that it has launched ShockHound, the company's first online music site offering millions of MP3s, band merchandise, music videos, and editorial content.

According to Hot Topic, Shockhound offers tracks from major record labels, like Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, Warner Music Group, and EMI Music, as well as independent labels. Hot chocolate made easy

When there's snow on the ground, I practically live on hot chocolate. However, I'm not a big fan of most of the mixes. They're just not as smooth as hot chocolate made from the real thing. Real hot chocolate is more work, of course, you have to melt chocolate, mix in your milk, and froth the drink. Firebox has a Hot Choctail Maker on sale, though, that can do all that, and more.

The Hot Choctail Maker is a blender combined with a coffee pot, with a few extra features added on for good measure. You pour … Read more

The 404 194: Where Justin gets cornered and becomes increasingly adorable

Nothing makes you feel better on a Monday morning than thinking about how much smarter you are than an Alaskan governor. After lightly touching on the Katie Couric and Sarah Palin interview, not to mention once again obsessing over the gorgeous Tina Fey, we discuss a handful of stories including the untimely death of a chef, kinky iPod accessories, Krispy Kreme heart attacks, and the future of the digital retirement home.

In a last-ditch effort to alleviate his parents' disappointment, Jeff won't be on the show tomorrow. Instead, we're super excited to have Clayton Morris, rising star of Fox's weekend edition of Fox and Friends. On today's show, we make the best of Jeff's last day and speaks to a number of stories including a notable Web site, VotefortheMILF.com. If you click on that link, the site redirects you to a page featuring a video of the Alaskan governor! In all likelihood, the site probably wasn't created by McCain's people. But hey--if that's all that Palin has going for her, milk it lady! PEW PEW PEW!

The 404 193: Where we prune the hedges of many small villages

Rana Sobhany of Medialets joins the show today for a riveting discussion of Sarah Palin centerfolds, Disney attack dogs, push up jocks and why women love Shia LeBeouf. Also, the death knells of Muxtape give way to a new music site, the future of IP addresses and, of course, your weekend box office. And yes, Sen. McCain apologized for missing the show yesterday, he was in a serious make-up session before the big debate. Wouldn't want to look too much like Emperor Palpatine, now would we?

Dan the Mantern here. My favorite story of the day, besides Justin's report on his first ever hockey game last night, concerns a mysterious package of hot dogs. Apparently, a package wrapped in duct tape was located outside Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Police evacuated the stadium and, even after discovering the innocuous contents of the package, decided to detonate those red hots. A mist of charred beef smell immediately shrouded the city. Really? You're gonna waste a bomb on a pack of hot dogs? Couldn't they have just called in champion hot dog eater Takeru Kobayashi, he can swallow like 20 dogs every ten seconds. Even better, they could have airlifted a local Boy Scout troop to the scene for a good ol' fashioned weenie roast.

The 404 183: Where it smells funky in here

It smells funky in the studio today, and it isn't just Wilson eating ravioli for breakfast. John Funk of Winnipeg, Canada, one of our favorite 404 listeners, joins the show to talk about Frank's Red Hot, the Buzz Out Loud hijack and hockey. The eh's and aboots abound!

Dan the Mantern here. On today's show we discuss celebrity sex tapes. From Paris Hilton to Austin Powers star Verne Troyer, it seems like everyone who's anyone has made a naughty film. Apparently, a spyware program has been circulating a phony link to an NSFW video of Barack Obama. No offense, but does anyone really think that Obama would have a sex tape? I really pity the fool who clicks the link only to find their hard drive infected by a virus. Even if the video was real, do you really need to see that? We wonder if the world would be as keen to see a Sarah Palin video or, dare I say it, a John McCain sex tape. If there is a recording of McCain taking care of his "executive privileges," I'm sure it's on 8 millimeter and you'd need your own hand-cranked projector to view it.

Get grandpa his FireFork, youngin'

Here's a solution to a problem that's been dogging mankind since the very first caveman figured out fire makes food taste good: Grandpa's FireFork. Sure, this could have been invented in the Iron Age, but it wasn't. Or if it was, it was lost to time. Which is perhaps why it is named as it is named. Grandpas all across the land tend to impart a certain wisdom you cannot find anywhere else. If anyone knows how to tame fire, it's the family elders--those who sit in rocking chairs chewing straw and jibber-jabbering about the … Read more
