Both Cingular and Verizon Wireless have pulled back from the kid-focused cell phone market as of this week. Verizon has completely halted production of the LG Migo VX1000, while Cingular will only sell its Firefly handsets through its online store (The Firefly will continue to be sold in big U.S. retailers like Wal-Mart and Target). Verizon says that it appears the LG VX3450L has taken the Migo's place -- the LG VX3450L is identical to the LG VX3450 but it has support for Chaperone, a Verizon service that lets parents keep close tabs on their kids. I picked up the latest 2007 Consumer Reports guide this week and went straight to their selections for the best quality cell phones. Yet I found myself a little perplexed by some of the top picks. Not only are many of the fave handsets over a year old, which is somewhat understandable given that the publication probably has a long lead time, but there were also several selections that I just couldn't agree with.
We were a little concerned when we didn't see the Samsung SCH-i760 at CTIA this year, but looks like this smart phone will see the light of day. According to Boy Genius Report, the Samsung i760 has been given the FCC stamp of approval, clearing the way for a U.S. release on either Verizon Wireless' or Sprint's network. There hasn't been a ton of information on this device, including specifics on pricing and release date, but we do know it will run Windows Mobile 6 and has a 1.3-megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.0, 128MB of … Read more
Even though I get hundreds of press releases a month, the e-mails from Brickhouse Mobile always stand out from the crowd. As the "preeminent mobile solution provider for the adult entertainment industry," (the company's words, not mine) Brickhouse definitely has a unique business; you might say it's the polar opposite of a company like Disney Mobile. Though Brickhouse isn't an MVNO, it does provide a variety of adult-themed cell phone content (both straight and gay) including wallpaper, videos, ringtones, and games. I haven't seen any of it personally--and I wonder what exactly an adult … Read more
Major record label EMI announced today that they have settled an ongoing copyright dispute with the Beatles that had prevented the label from licensing their music for distribution. In light of EMI's recent deal to release its catalog on iTunes, it appears that there is little left to prevent the Fab Four's back catalog from finally being released online.
Legal issues aside, the band has historically declined offers to sell downloads of its music. Still, with Steve Jobs using the Beatles' music as part of his Macworld demonstration for the iPhone, it's fair to say Apple is … Read more

iStockphoto, an online subsidiary of stock-art seller Getty Images, is taking its business to consumers. The companies began a pilot phase of the project in the United Kingdom. Subscribers using the Orange, O2, T-Mobile, 3, Virgin Mobile and Vodafone networks will be able to download images beginning in April.
The pilot could be expanded to the United States … Read more
