LG Optimus S is for Sprint

SAN FRANCISCO--The Sanyo Zio and the Samsung Transform are not the only two new Sprint handsets announced at CTIA Fall 2010. We also had a chance to take a look at the LG Optimus S, which is the other Android smartphone to support the carrier's new Sprint ID user-interface system. It's also notably the only one of the three that ships with Android 2.2.

The Optimus S is the most affordable entry-level one of the three. We quite like its minimal candy-bar style with the soft touch finish on the back and the 3.2-inch HVGA touch-screen … Read more

LG unveils the Optimus T

SAN FRANCISCO--LG has just announced the LG Optimus T, which it bills as a handset for first-time smartphone users. It looks a lot like the Optimus One that was announced for Europe last month.

The Optimus T ships with Android 2.2, and features "Voice Actions for Android," which lets you control the phone just by speaking--you can send texts, listen to music, call contacts, search Google, get directions, and surf the Web just with voice controls. The Optimus T has a 3.2-inch glass touch screen, a soft touch finish on the back, a 600MHz processor, Wi-Fi, … Read more

Sprint announces the LG Optimus S

SAN FRANCISCO--Sprint has announced the LG Optimus S, one of three devices the carrier is launching with its new Sprint ID pack system.

As with the Sanyo Zio and the Samsung Transform, you will be able to select a pre-configured ID pack for your Optimus S. The ID packs include special widgets, wallpapers, and presets that suit a certain package--for example, the Yahoo ID pack will have customized widgets for all your favorite Yahoo news feeds.

The device itself is pretty similar to the Optimus One and the Optimus T. It has a 3.2-inch HVGA touch screen and will … Read more

Nvidia Optimus laptops: Which are prime?

Over the last few months, we've seen quite a few Nvidia Optimus laptops. Optimus automatically switches between discrete and integrated graphics, powering the horsepower down when not used in order to save a little battery life. It's a similar idea to what's also included on the spring 2010 15-inch MacBook Pro, except Apple never created any branding for the concept.

And there's the rub: it's basically invisible tech, yet Nvidia has branded the concept for greater visibility. Really it amounts to something we'd obviously prefer to have in any laptop with dedicated graphics. Right … Read more

Transformers crash land on Android OS

Glu Mobile has released a port of its Transformers G1: Awakening iPhone game to the Android Market this week. Awakening is a turn-based strategy game starring 23 of our favorite robots in disguise from the 1980s cartoon, including Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron, and Starscream. The story loosely follows the animated plot with players taking control of the heroic Autobots as they wage their battle to destroy the evil forces of the Decepticons shortly after crash landing on Earth.

After the initial download and installation, the game prompts you to download an additional 7MB of data to either the SD card … Read more

New Acer laptops add 3D, Optimus

A handful of new laptop announcements from Acer kick off the week, covering everything from 3D-enabled systems to the long-life TimelineX series. Most of the new features offered are things we've previously seen on other laptops (specifically Nvidia's 3D Vision and Optimus), but we've been liking Acer's designs lately, so it's nice to see them add these useful extras. We've also seen some of these mentioned out of Europe previously, so they shouldn't come as a complete surprise.

Acer Aspire 5745DG This is probably the single most interesting new entry, taking a familiar … Read more

Is this LG Optimus One coming to Verizon as LG Vortex?

Last week saw LG announcing two new Android devices: the Optimus Chic and the Optimus One. At the time, the compnay indicated that the phones would be released to European carriers starting in October, but it did not hint at an eventual U.S. release. Things look to be changing however, as more leaked information has hit the Web.

According to TheDroidGuy, the LG "Vortex" will be a Verizon Wireless-branded version of the Optimus One. Although the outside bears a slightly different desgn, the inside is reported to be the same with a 600MHz processor, a 3.2-inch … Read more

LG launches Android-powered Optimus One, Chic

As expected, LG Electronics unveiled the LG Optimus One and Optimus Chic on Tuesday, two Android devices aimed for smartphone newbies.

There are a number of similarities between the two handsets. Both ship running Android 2.2 with LG's custom user interface, which is designed to make the smartphone experience "fun and user-friendly." They also feature a 3.2-inch HVGA capacitive touch screen, 600MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 processor, and all the same core features (Google services, wireless options, and so forth). That said, there are some minor differences.

Dubbed the stylish one, the Optimus Chic has a slightly … Read more

Samsung debuts new QX, RF, NF and SF laptops

A year ago, Samsung wasn't much of a player in the laptop space aside from a few Netbooks. This year, however, the equation changed. We've seen Samsung midrange laptops that have offered great value for their components, with designs that seem to be getting progressively better. With the company's newest batch of laptop announcements, that trend seems to be continuing.

The NF and SF series of Netbooks and laptops adopt a similar design, with curved, glossy lines and raised walls around the keyboard deck. The look feels particularly suited to living-room use, as if these laptops were … Read more

Will giant Optimus Prime battle giant Gundam?

Robot one-upmanship is happening at an alarming pace in East Asia as the Chinese have unveiled a giant Optimus Prime in Beijing, no doubt to counter giant robots recently built by the Japanese. Is a clash of the robo-titans imminent?

The Transformers icon stands nearly 40 feet tall and weighs 6 tons. Fittingly, the head Autobot was fashioned out of recycled car parts such as engines and tires. It took five truckloads of parts to put Prime together.

The colossus dwarfs puny humans at the new Green Dream Park, located northwest of Beijing's "Bird's Nest" National … Read more
