DiggSuggest tells you what you should read on Digg

DiggSuggest is a new service created by 20-year-old Digg user who has used the service's API data feed to provide a feature the popular social news site currently doesn't: suggested readings.

All you have to do is plug in your Digg username (or someone else's) and it will scour your past dugg stories to serve up suggestions for stories both popular and upcoming. The more you digg the better the results should be. Not only does it show stories, but it also groups together keywords related to the things you like.

That's about all it does … Read more

User revolts on social networks: They're here to stay

AUSTIN, Texas--If you run a social media site, from a blog to a virtual world to a network like Facebook, you're going to have to deal with angry users, and that's a fact of life.

Such was the theme of the discussion at a South by Southwest Interactive panel on Saturday afternoon called "Social Network Coups: The Users are Revolting."

The all-female panel (a rarity in the tech world!) was moderated by Annalee Newitz, editor of the Gawker Media-owned science fiction blog IO9.com, and consisted of Jessamyn West of MetaFilter, Gina Trapani of fellow Gawker … Read more

Digg's CEO shoots down 'bidding war' rumors

Social news site Digg, a perpetual target of acquisition rumors, normally addresses the "is _____ buying you?" questions with a "no comment" answer. Not this time.

Jay Adelson, the company's CEO, posted a blog entry on Friday in response to a rampant rumor that Microsoft, Google, and two major media companies were placing bids on the hot start-up's price tag. A sizeable number of avid Digg users were thrown into panic mode over the prospect of a corporate parent. Adelson appeared to deny the rumors outright.

"Normally our policy is to not comment … Read more

MobiTV tries (and fails) to censor Internet

Update 2: MobiTV has backed down, and appears to have kissed and made up with HowardForums. See below.

Updated to include a statement from MobiTV (see below)

In a fantastic demonstration of the Streisand Effect, Silicon Valley startup MobiTV is currently engaged in an almost comedic yet futile effort to scrub a 31 character "secret" URL from the Internet.

MobiTV sells a streaming TV subscription service to mobile phone users. For $9.99 a month, Sprint, AT&T and Alltel customers can view low bandwidth streams of a number of TV channels right on their handsets. The … Read more

Will Diggers dig a corporate overlord?

Update at 3:35 p.m. PST: Digg CEO Jay Adelson has posted a blog that seems to be saying talk of a Digg sale is much ado about nothing. My colleague Caroline McCarthy has written about what Adelson had to say on News.com's The Social.

Are we nearing the end of Digg independence?

Michael Arrington over at TechCrunch is reporting Friday that Google, Microsoft, and two media companies may be preparing to make an offer on Digg. Just how much Digg could fetch isn't quite clear: Arrington reports it's likely to be in the range … Read more

SXSWi: Hello, Austin!

AUSTIN, Texas--I just rolled off a JetBlue flight where half the passengers were typing on MacBooks and talking about last night's episode of Lost and the other half were wearing worn-out band T-shirts and combat boots. Incoming text messages from Twitter are making my cell phone buzz off the hook. I have this sudden craving for baby-back ribs and a giant margarita.

I guess it must be South by Southwest.

I'll be here through Tuesday night for South by Southwest Interactive, the digital-culture arm of the festival, and I'm pumped. Unlike my seasoned colleague Daniel Terdiman, I'… Read more

Report: Google, Microsoft, and two media companies bidding on Digg

If every blog rumor were to be believed, social news site Digg would have been bought a dozen times over by now, so take the latest one with the requisite grain of salt.

TechCrunch reported early on Friday that four companies are in the running to place bids on Digg--Microsoft, Google, and two unidentified "media companies"--and that a sale may happen soon. It'll likely be less than the $300 million that Digg was once rumored to go for; TechCrunch's Michael Arrington cited sources who said that Google is prepared to bid $200 million to $225 … Read more

Egad! Has SXSWi lost its edge?

These days, Twitter is a worldwide phenomenon, a household name, and has even spawned a verb, "to Tweet."

But before the second week of March of last year, when thousands of geeks began arriving in Austin, Texas, for the South by Southwest Interactive festival (SXSWi), few people had even heard of the nascent microblogging service. Within days, however, Twitter had taken the conference by storm. The story of how Twitter took over SXSWi, and how it spread to the outside world because of the many influential early-adopters in attendance, is well known.

"People see what happened with … Read more
