Microtek to sell flat panel TVs

TVs galore this morning.

Microtek, known for its scanning and digital imaging technology, announced Wednesday that it was launching two television lines.

The Microtek line includes a 42-inch flat panel plasma television for $1,500 and a 50-inch version for $2,000. The Cineon line offers a 42-inch flat panel plasma for $1,600 and a 50-inch for $2,200.

On Friday, Microtek announced that it will be adding a 42-inch LCD HDTV to each of those new lines. The L42CX2A for $1,900 will be added to the Microtek line and the CL42HA for $2,000 will be added … Read more

Dell monitor leaked pre-CES

Like what you see? At least a few Dell employees (or several from marketing) are excited about the company's new 27-inch LCD wide-screen flat-panel LCD monitor. Someone spilled the news pre-CES.

The story making rounds in the blogosphere is that this leak was due to a misposted image on Dell's Web site. Kudos to Electronista for grabbing this one before it was taken down. Since the "accidental" leak, Dell has replaced the image with an image diagramming the 2007WFP Wide-Screen Black Flat Panel Monitor, its 20.1-inch version.

Couldn't find any pricing for you, but (… Read more

Rotate your TV by remote--on the wall

It's a problem that many never think about until it's too late. You buy a flat-panel TV, choose a wall for it, and then it dawns on you: There's too much glare to see the screen where you had planned to put it.

That's where this could come in handy. The Peerless motorized wall mount can hold your TV and turn it 28 degrees from side to side, 25 degrees down and 7 degrees up--all by remote control.

The "X-arm" itself weighs 180 pounds, a heft needed to support flat panels in sizes from … Read more

Time to watch TV? Turn on the mirror

Consider this an update to the old Hollywood cliche of the wall safe hidden behind a painting. The difference is that, instead of family heirlooms and Krugerrands, the treasure is your television set.

Media Decor, which brought us the "HideandChic" art-over-TV disguise, has released a two-way "Media-Mirror" that conceals your flat-screen TV. If we understand the way it works (always a dangerous proposition), the framed mirror doesn't slide away to reveal the television; instead, its reflection essentially disappears when the TV behind it is turned on by remote control. It's able to do this … Read more

First 42-inch HDTV for under $1,000

Stop the presses. We mean it this time. Vizio is selling a 42-inch plasma HDTV for under $1,000.

But don't rush out with your riot gear just yet: Electronista says the flat panels will go on sale at that price at Costco for one day only next week, presumably Black Friday.

Vizio will be offering deals on other products as well, but the 42-incher is the headline grabber, the first high-definition TV of its size to break the $1,000 barrier. "A slight upgrade to the existing P42, the VP42 carries over many of the existing features … Read more

Siamese LCDs are joined at the stand

No, you're not seeing double. And no, it's not an image-loading bug. (Though that's always possible, until we work out the kinks in Crave's publishing system.)

These are really dual LCD monitors, joined at the hip by a shared pedestal. Soyo's GoVideo Dual LCD line comes in your choice of 17- or 19-inch screens respectively priced at $1,000 and $1,200, including built-in speakers, according to Electronista. They can also pivot 180 degrees away from each other (see bottom photo), allowing a face-to-face work style that reminds us of old-fashioned partners desks.

LCDs may be headed for price cuts

This Christmas, Sharp Electronics is going to hunt down its enemies.

Last year, the Japanese electronics giant lost some footing in the LCD TV market, in part because its rivals had moved to a different standard of manufacturing that allowed them to come out with cheaper, bigger sets.

Those days are over, one Sharp employee told me. The company is already making TVs out of glass from its eight-generation Kameyama plant. The sheets of glass from this plant measure 2.16 meters by 2.46 meters. Six 52-inch LCDs can be popped out of a single sheet. The smaller glass … Read more

Sony makes splash (and mess) with ad

Gotta hand it to Sony on this one. The once-dominant company in practically all consumer electronics has fallen far from grace, but it still has some life left in the style department.

Sony hired Hollywood director Jonathan Glazer to create a showstopper commercial for its Bravia flat-panel TVs. By many accounts in the blogosphere and elsewhere, he succeeded at least in getting people's attention.

The ad, which features a series of outrageous paint explosions, took 10 days and 250 people to film, according to Sony. The cleanup was almost as bad, requiring the services of 60 people over 5 … Read more
