For iOS 5, Apple teamed up with Twitter and included native Twitter integration. The deep integration allows developers to implement Twitter in apps with little effort. As such, users will begin to see the new integration more often as developers take advantage of the new feature. … Read more
Microsoft says it's learned its lesson from its disappointing Windows Phone promotion last year.
Windows Phone President Andy Lees said he expects a steady stream of product releases over the next few months, as well as a marketing campaign that will rely more on its vendor and carriers partners. That contrasts with Microsoft's strategy from a year ago, when the company launched several phones at once in a pre-holiday blitz, meanwhile also shouldering much of the promotional burden itself.
Result: Microsoft struggled to make a significant dent in the market.

Android has widened its lead as the top smartphone OS in the U.S., according to the latest stats from ComScore.
For the three months ending September, Google's mobile platform grabbed 44.8 percent of the market, an increase of almost 5 points from the prior quarter. Apple's iOS retained second place with a 27.4 percent share of U.S. smartphone owners, up slightly from the previous period.
Android and iOS were the only two smartphone operating systems to gain market share.
RIM's BlackBerry took third place with 18.9 percent, a drop of almost 5 … Read more
Verizon's "can you hear me now?" guy has retired from that gig, but it now seems people receiving calls from an iPhone 4S are picking up the torch and asking the same question.
That's because there seems to be a bug--reported on all three major iPhone carriers in the U.S.--that's occasionally keeping owners of the new iPhone from hearing anything in their earpiece when making outgoing calls. … Read more
As the holiday shopping season rears its (insert your adjective of choice here) head, a just-released study from IBM shows that mobile devices are continuing their push toward making it a post-PC world.
According to the latest IBM Coremetrics Benchmark numbers, traffic to retailer Web sites from mobile devices will more than double this November, with 15 percent of people who log on to such sites doing so with a mobile gadget.
October numbers from IBM show that year over year the amount of people who used a mobile gadget to touch down on a retailer's site jumped from 4.2 percent to 11 percent. In the same period, total mobile sales shot up to 9.6 percent from last year's 3.4 percent
iPad users will no doubt be welcomed by online retailers in the next couple of months: IBM says site visitors on that device will make more actual purchases than visitors using other mobile gizmos. That prediction is based on the fact that conversion rates for last month were 6.8 percent on the iPad versus 3.6 percent on other mobile gadgets.… Read more
This week brought good news for those affected with lackluster iPhone battery life after upgrading to iOS 5. Help is on the way.
Apple copped to the quick drainage problem and said it was working on a fix in the form of a software update that will arrive to users in the "next few weeks."
In the meantime, the company pushed out two uncharacteristically quick, nearly back to back betas of iOS 5.0.1 to developers, the software that includes the fix, along with patches to other bugs that were in the initial release of the iOS … Read more
The flood of iOS apps and games continues at the iTunes App Store and this week has been particularly big for new releases.
While I usually try to incorporate a theme into these iOS app collections, this week I wanted to let you know what I'm playing right now. These games are all high quality, from three different genres, are all new to iOS, and have captured my attention all week.
This week's collection of apps are games I'm playing right now. The first is a one-of-a-kind tennis game that has a unique control style along with a comic book story line. The second is a remade Mac game with an extraordinary amount of content and a beautiful setting. The last is a sequel to a popular FPS franchise and might be the best yet.… Read more
