If synthpop star Thomas Dolby's assumed stage name is a testament to his appreciation of sound, his new film, "The Invisible Lighthouse" honors his love of light, specifically a twinkling light from his favorite lighthouse on the East Coast of England, which lulled him to sleep, in childhood. But as satellite navigation now renders it obsolete and global warming and beach erosion threaten its very existence, the lighthouse is in danger of closure. In an attempt to stem the tide and save his cherished landmark, Dolby has produced the awareness-raising film "The Invisible Lighthouse" and … Read more
Yesterday, Disney Interactive announced Star Wars: Tiny Death Star, a new game that's coming soon to mobile devices.
"Tiny" and "Death Star" aren't words you'd normally put together ("That's no moon -- it's a space station"), but there's a method to this tiny madness: The game is being developed by NimbleBit, creators of the venerated Tiny Tower.
Does that mean Tiny … Read more
A Cyberpunk world, in a post apocalyptic wasteland being infested by a zombie army? C-Wars seems to hit all of the major buzzwords that would set off any gamer's alarm. Onipunks' brainchild might turn off many players who have been jaded by the promises of many so so and eh-inducing games released this year, the ones that seemed to be the products of some assembly-line design model created to separate us from our money. But after playing the Demo, it would be a lie to say I'm anything less than ecstatic that this game has been successfully funded … Read more
When fans of established bands discover that their favorite front man has gone solo, it's generally a moment of extreme trepidation. Many would agree that The Stones, Genesis, and The Police were far greater than Mick Jagger, Peter Gabriel, and Sting on their own. But then you have artists like Neil Young, Michael Jackson, and Justin Timberlake, who really matured as artists once they struck out on their own. As much as I adore 311, I also love Nick Hexum's new project, Nick Hexum Quintet, which finds the singer, backed by a stellar group of musicians, including his … Read more

Mahjong's foreign design and perceived "mystical" origin may have marginalized it among Western card gamers. But did you know that Americans have been aware of the game since the late 19th Century? The first company to sell Mahjong sets in the U.S. was Abercrombie & Fitch, back in the 1920s. The game proved to be so popular that A&F's founder, Ezra Fitch, sent agents to China to purchase as many Mahjong sets as they could to resell in the U.S..
By the turn of the millennium, Mahjong had already garnered a healthy … Read more
An exponent of artists like Madonna, Kylie Minogue, and Ladytron, Little Boots has some pretty big dancing shoes to fill. But the 29-year-old British synthpop singer (born Victoria Hesketh) is definitely on her way. Her sophomore album "Nocturnes," following on the heels of her UK Top 5, Gold-selling debut "Hands," finds Boots working with DFA Records co-founder and production visionary, Tim Goldsworthy, Hercules and Love Affair's Andy Butler, and Simian Mobile Disco's James Ford, on nine tracks so danceable they'll wear out your boogie shoes.
Using "Nocturnes" as our North Star, … Read more
I have a serious problem.
No, not that one. Not that one, either. My current serious problem is time: there's not nearly enough of it, what with all the deals to find, tech stuff to write about, puppies to walk, books to read, family to enjoy, and insanely great TV to watch.
When am I supposed to game?!
You may find yourself with the same problem after today's abundance of dirt-cheap game deals. Starting with this one:
For a limited time, GameFly Digital is offering BioShock Infinite (PC) bundled with Mafia II (PC) for $10.87 when you … Read more

Parental relationships can be quite complicated. For some of us, the same can be said about our relationship to software. Emmy & Grammy-nominated comedian and actress, Margaret Cho tackles the former (along with sex, politics, drugs, guns, ethnicity, and insanity) in her new aptly-titled show "Mother" -- and the latter in her day-to-day life.
As the comedian, best known for her TV work on Lifetime's "Drop Dead Diva," NBC's "30 Rock," and VH1's "The Cho Show" and stand-up films "I'm the One That I Want," "… Read more
