Netgear DGND3700 router

The Netgear DGND3700 is essentially the same as the Netgear WNDR3700 RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router (Premium Edition) with only one difference: it has a built-in DSL modem. This means, DSL subscribers can forgo getting a modem from their Internet provider (and hence save some money) and plug the DSL phone line directly into this device.

For more information about the DGND3700's features and how it performs as a wireless router, check out the full review of the WNDR3700.

Nokia E6-00 Qwerty camera phone fires up Symbian in leaked pics

Pictures of the Nokia E6-00 in action have hit the Internet. A user of Italian forum Nokiateca has posted the first photos and videos (since removed) of the mobile phone turned on and running Symbian.

The E6-00, which has yet to be officially announced by Nokia, packs a Qwerty keyboard and a 4:3 screen. It has a relatively meager 480x640-pixel display unfortunately, measuring around 2.5 inches across. The phone packs HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, but a key feature is an 8-megapixel camera that shoots 720p high-definition video.

New Intel solid-state drive hits 600GB

Intel has entered the high-capacity big leagues with a new series of solid-state drives that offer up to 600 gigabytes in capacity.

The world's largest chipmaker is tapping into its most cutting-edge manufacturing technology to get the larger capacities--with chip geometries shrinking to a mere 25 nanometers. Those geometries are a step ahead of its newest Core i series processors, which are built on a slightly "fatter" 32-nanometer manufacturing process.

Intel's third-generation SSD 320 Series comes in 40, 80, 120, 160, 300, and 600GB options.

And, of course, they're faster. The new SSDs deliver up to 39,500 input/output operations per second (IOPS) random reads and 23,000 IOPS random writes on its highest-capacity drives. Maximum sequential write speeds have doubled from its second-generation SSDs to 220 megabytes-per-second (MB/s) sequential writes. Read throughputs have been boosted to 270 MB/s sequential reads. These numbers are comparable to--and in some cases exceed--published numbers from Samsung, a leading SSD manufacturer and supplier. … Read more

Before there was the Xperia Play

Sony Ericsson is betting big that its Xperia Play will offer a new way to bring gamers and phone users together, but it's not the first time that the company has tried to do so.

Seven years ago, just as Sony Ericsson was getting into a groove with notable handsets like the P910 and S710, the company rolled out one of the more interesting mobile accessories I've ever seen. The EGB-10 Gameboard allowed you to play games on selected Sony Ericsson handsets while using controls that were more comfortable than a standard navigational keypad.

Though its design was … Read more

Canon 200-400mm lens leads supertele charge

Canon today disclosed prices for previously announced overhauls of its 500mm and 600mm supertelephoto lenses, but more unusually, announced a new 200-400mm model that will join the company's already large lens family.

Nikon and Canon, locked in fierce competition for professional photographers, often have similar lens models, but Nikon for years has offered a highly regarded and newly refurbished 200-400mm supertele zoom while Canon stuck with its increasingly elderly 100-400mm design. Now Canon is countering with the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender l.4x.

Some of the nomenclature should look familiar: f/4L means a continuous maximum … Read more

Verizon VL600 4G LTE USB modem gets a firmware update

I reviewed the LG VL600 4G LTE USB modem awhile ago and conclude that apart from the limited and expensive data plans Verizon offers with it, it makes a great solution for mobile Internet access.

It seems to have just gotten better. Verizon announced today a firmware upgrade for the device that the company calls a "software update." This is not to be confused with the VZAccess Manager, which is used to start the connection.

According to Verizon, the firmware update to the VL600 modem offers the following improvements:

Successful reconnection to the network after the SIM card's activation or reset.

The time and size of LTE Data usage sessions are now accurately recorded in the VZAccess Manager Session Log.… Read more

CES: Skystream turbine makes most of air stream

Veteran wind turbine manufacturer Southwest Windpower unveiled a highly efficient small wind turbine at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas today.

Southwest Windpower claims the Skystream 600, its follow-up to the Skystream 3.7, can produce 7,400 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year when used in an area with an average annual wind speed of 12 mph.

If true, that's a pretty impressive small wind turbine. Many small wind turbines sold in recent years have touted around 2,000 kilowatt-hours annually under average conditions.

Consider that Helix Wind claims about 3,362 kilowatt-hours annually with an average … Read more

Netgear overhauls its ADSL wireless router combo solution

LAS VEGAS--Two years ago, Netgear announced its first dual-band Wireless-N router with built-in DSL modem, the RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N Router + DSL Modem DGND3300, offering DSL consumers a high-end alternative to modem/wireless router combo solutions offered by service providers, which tend to be slow and lacking.

Now, here at CES 2011, the company is kicking this solution up a notch, by announcing today the N600 Wireless  Dual-Band Gigabit ADSL Modem DGND3700 Router, which it calls "the ultimate home gateway."

The new DGND3700 differentiates itself from the old DGND330 via a long list of new features. Apart from the fact that it also has a built-in DSL modem, supports concurrent dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz), and other usual networking and security features, it also offers:

Two USB ports to support external storage. These ports are compatible with Netgear's ReadyShare network storage functionality.

Gigabit Ethernet and DLNA compliance that allows for network digital media streaming to any DLNA-compliant TV, game console, or media player within the network.

Live parental controls that enable comprehensive Web filtering functionality.

Guest networking, which allows for giving separate Internet access to guests while keeping them from accessing local resources, such as file or printers.

A broadband usage meter that automatically tracks broadband usage notifies if a set level is reached.… Read more

Clear 4G+ modem review: Mobile Internet delight

I recently reviewed Verizon's VL600 4G USB modem and found it a painful conundrum that the modem is superspeedy and yet Verizon's data plans are superlimited (and expensive). That problem is solved with Clear's 4G+ Mobile Series S USB modem.

This modem is very similar to the VL600 in that it offers extremely fast Internet access using cellular signals.

However, it has a few advantages. First of all, it's more compact, has a swiveling USB head (which would fit in any USB port, even hard-to-reach ones), and comes with a port for an external antenna. It … Read more
