Toshiba expands its portable storage

Toshiba Storage Device Division (SDD) announced its latest device in portable storage, a 500GB external hard drive, the Toshiba HDDR500E03X.

Color- and design-wise, it resembles its predecessor with a glossy black finish and frost white contemporary graphics, weighing 6 ounces and measuring 0.65 inch by 3.19 inches by 5 inches. This bus-powered USB 2.0 drive should be great for media storage and/or system backups. Bundled with the drive is the NTI Shadow backup software (preloaded), USB 2.0 cable, and quick install guide.

WD adds FireWire 800 to Mac external hard drive

Back in June, I reviewed Western Digital's My Passport Studio and complained that it doesn't offer a FireWire 800 connection. Other than that, the drive was one of the best compact external hard drives on the market.

On Thursday, WD announced that it added this connection and capped the storage size in the latest revision of the drive to 500GB (from 320GB).

With this addition, the new My Passport Studio drive is now larger and has all three of the most popular interfaces for pocket-size external hard drives, including USB 2.0, FireWire 400, and FireWire 800. All of these connections are bus-powered, meaning you won't need to use a separate power cable.

Recently in a blog about hard drives with built-in disaster protection, I mentioned that off-site backup could be time-consuming and inconvenient. I wasn't entirely right.
