Apple updates digital camera raw support

For photographers who use Canon, Olympus, Panasonic, and Pentax cameras that have to date not been fully supported in Apple's iPhoto and Aperture programs, you may be in luck. Apple has issued a digital camera raw compatibility update that adds raw support for the following camera models:

Canon EOS Rebel T3 / 1100D / Kiss X50 Canon EOS Rebel T3i / 600D / Kiss X5 Olympus E-5 Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 Pentax K-r Pentax K-5

In addition to the raw additions, the update fixes some processing compatibility issues with the Nikon D7000, Coolpix P7000, and Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 and GH2 cameras.

Apple releases Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 3.5, adds Nikon D7000

Apple has released version 3.5 of its Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update, which includes support for several new cameras including Nikon's D700 and Coolpix P7000.

Other cameras included in the update are:

Apple releases Aperture 3.1.1 update

Apple has patched a few stability and performance issues in Aperture with a new update for the program, bringing the version to 3.1.1. The update specifically fixes problems with the iLife Media Browser, and also addresses problems with publishing to online services such as MobileMe, Facebook, and Flickr.

The majority of the fixes address unexpected quits or system hangs that happen when performing specific functions such as fitting slideshows to soundtracks and importing photos from cameras, but the update addresses some rare problems where photos could be deleted or improperly imported during the import process.

Aperture 3.1 not installing properly on Macs running OS X 10.5.8

Apple's professional image-editing software, Aperture, has recently been updated to version 3.1 though some users running Mac OS X 10.5.8 may not be able to install the update.

Users may find that using Software Update to install Aperture 3.1 fails to upgrade the software. Similarly, attempting to use the manual update (found on CNET's Downloads site) also fails to install the update.

Mac OS X update perks up photo performance

Apple's release of Mac OS X 10.6.5 yesterday carried some improvements for photographers: better performance, and support for raw photo formats from a handful of newer cameras.

The release notes mention simply that the update "addresses performance of some image-processing operations in iPhoto and Aperture." In my tests on a dual-core MacBook Pro, however, I found one particular bottleneck is significantly relieved: rendering the raw photos so they can be viewed at 100 percent--when one photo pixel takes up one screen pixel.
