Sony: 'We won't impose any restrictions on PS4 used games'

The battle lines have been drawn.

After Microsoft created a controversy with an ambiguous used-games policy at the launch of the Xbox One, Sony's striking back with a simple message to gamers: "We won't impose any restrictions on used games" for the PS4.

Sony's $399 PlayStation 4 coming for holidays

Sony's next-generation console not only had its hardware shown off on Monday, but its price too.

At the tail end of its E3 press conference, Sony said it would charge $399 for the PS4 in the U.S., which it plans to launch in time for holiday shopping in the U.S. and Europe. The price is 349 pounds in the U.K. and 399 euros in other parts of Europe.

The price comes in $100 less than what Microsoft plans to charge for its Xbox One -- news that was delivered earlier Monday.

Sony takes the wraps off PlayStation 4 hardware

Sony has finally taken the wraps off the look and design of its next-generation PlayStation.

At its E3 press conference Monday night, the consolemaker provided a quick reveal of the PS4 box, which looks a tad bit larger than the current PS3 design.

Sony gave people a teaser of the console's design near the end of May, on the eve of Microsoft's Xbox One reveal, and had previously shown off pieces of hardware like the controller and new Eye accessory at the original PS4 reveal back in February.

After enduring criticism from the gaming community that the Xbox One launch last month was light on the gaming news, Microsoft responded on Monday at a pre-E3 press conference with a torrent of game announcements, including a handful of key exclusive titles, such as Dead Rising 3, and a tease of the next game in the Halo franchise, which will land next year.

Halo, Titanfall lead Xbox One games at E3

Microsoft has announced the lineup of games for its upcoming Xbox One console at its 2013 E3 press conference in Los Angeles with highlights including Ryse: Son of Rome and the god-sim Project Spark.

The first game announced at Microsoft's E3 press conference in Los Angeles was Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, featuring Kiefer Sutherland as the voice of Snake.

Xbox One launching in November for $499

It's official: the Xbox One is coming this November for $499.

Microsoft announced the official pricing for the Xbox One at its E3 press conference this afternoon, with the new console also selling for $499 in the US, 499 Euros in Europe and £429 in the UK.

Microsoft also confirmed that Xbox Live Gold Memberships would carry over to the Xbox One, as well as a new program starting July 1 where Xbox Live Gold members will get two free game downloads. The first two games announced for the program are Assassin's Creed 2 and Halo 3.… Read more

E3, the big video game trade show, kicks off on Monday. And 2013 looks to be one of the biggest years ever.

The games industry is at a crossroads, with "hard-core gaming" under onslaught from 99-cent casual iPad and smartphone games. Heading into E3, Sony has more to prove with the PlayStation 4 (PS4) than its console-making competition. Microsoft has already shown that, in its quest to take over your living room, the Xbox One will offer more than just upgraded graphics and a new controller. And for good or ill (ill, for now), Microsoft's used games and always-on plans are on the table and it can now mostly concentrate on wowing the public with games.
