Roundup: Three Blu-ray players for less than $300

During the 2008 holiday season, we found plenty of affordable Blu-ray players to recommend under $300. Fast-forward a couple months, and we're surprised to find that many of those players are either discontinued (Panasonic DMP-BD35) or are no longer discounted.

You can still get a few Blu-ray players for a bargain, but you'll have to give up some features to get under the $300 mark. None of these players have multichannel analog-audio outputs and they also lack onboard decoding for DTS-HD Master Audio. That being said, most people won't have any complaints with the Blu-ray image quality … Read more

Review: Insignia NS-2BRDVD does bare-bones Blu-ray at a budget price

During the 2008 holiday season, we found plenty of affordable Blu-ray players to recommend under $300. Fast-forward a couple months, and we're surprised to find that many of the players are either discontinued (Panasonic DMP-BD35) or no longer discounted (Sony BDP-S350.)

The Insignia NS-2BRDVD is one of the few players actually still available for a budget price, but you'll be sacrificing quite a few features to save your dollars. The NS-2BRDVD currently isn't Profile 2.0-compatible (although a firmware update is supposedly coming in March), it lacks full onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, … Read more

Insignia Sport MP3 Player with Bluetooth is loaded with features and fading away

If you want the Insignia Sport MP3 Player with Bluetooth, now is the time--the player has limited availability and BestBuy does not appear to be scheduling production for more. You may be rightfully asking yourself why you would want a generic brand MP3 player with one foot out the door. (Or how this outdated player has stealthily edged onto Crave.) At $89.99 for 4GB, it's not shockingly cheap, and it's basic design is far from eye-catching.

What the Insignia Sport does have going for it, though, is an array of features unmatched by most other MP3 players. … Read more

Insignia NS-BRDVD Blu-ray player is relatively cheap, but light on features

Say what you will about HD DVD, but the one nice thing about the format was that the hardware was cheap. Since HD DVD has left the format war, we've seen prices slowly creep down on standalone Blu-ray players, but they're still far too expensive for the average consumer. The Insignia NS-BRDVD is the least expensive standalone player we've seen so far, with a list price of $300, but as you might expect, the player skimps on the features to hit this price point. Profile 2.0, multichannel analog outputs, and high-resolution soundtrack decoding are all missing, … Read more

Audiophile MP3 players, by the numbers

When Jasmine and I evaluate MP3 players for CNET reviews, we always try to spend a few sentences describing any noticeable audio performance characteristics we detect during our subjective testing. We'll play around with all of the gadget's different EQ and sound enhancement options, listen back on our reference headphones, and run through a playlist of familiar music. We're only human, however, and hearing loss, ear wax, head congestion, and hangovers can skew our perceptions of audio quality from day to day. Thankfully, we have Eric Franklin.… Read more

Insignia Kix review and photos

Best Buy appears intent on expanding its line of MP3 players. The latest addition, dubbed the Insignia Kix (1GB), screams budget: It has a small screen, a plastic body, and a price tag of just $50. No doubt, the Kix is cheap (and feels it), but it's not without its merits. The player offers decent sound quality, comes with interchangeable USB covers, and includes a couple of compelling features, such as an FM tuner and subscription music support. Best Buy issues security warning on Insignia digital picture frames

Say cheese...not.

Best Buy is warning customers who purchased its Insignia 10.4-inch Digital Picture Frames that their device may be harboring a virus, according an advisory posted on its Web site over the weekend.
