How to install Windows 8 beta

Microsoft's Windows 8 beta is now available as a free download, which means that it's time to figure out how to install it.

Officially called the Consumer Preview, the Windows 8 beta is actually quite simple to install. There are some requirements, though. Most Windows 7 computers ought to be able to handle Windows 8. You'll want to have: a 1 gigahertz or faster processor 1 gig of RAM for 32-bit or 2 gigs for 64-bit a 16 gig hard drive for 32-bit, or 20 gigs for 64-bit a graphics card that supports Microsoft DirectX 9 or … Read more

More updates regarding the Download.com Installer

Download Community,

I just wanted to send out a quick follow-up to my post on Wednesday.

(By the way, yes I now I have my own account, so I can post here myself. I wanted to get that last one up quickly since it was already late in coming, and Cat already had an account, so I went with it. Sad, but true. Oh, and because you all know who Cat is, but may have no clue who I am, I'm the General Manager of Download.com).

Clearly we had a big breakdown this past week and I sincerely … Read more

A note from Sean regarding the Download.com Installer

Dear Download.com Community,

Some press surfaced yesterday about how we're bundling advertising offers with an open source software called Nmap. The bundling of this software was a mistake on our part and we apologize to the user and developer communities for the unrest it caused. In addition to immediately taking Nmap out of the download manager, we reviewed all open source files in our catalog to ensure none are being bundled. It is a Download.com policy not to bundle open source software and we will continue to take pains to ensure this does not happen again.

Despite getting off to a smooth start, some users are experiencing problems upgrading to Apple's latest version of iOS.

How to speed up OS X installations

Generally installing OS X takes about 20 to 40 minutes, but there are times when the install process may take longer or seem to hang at a specific step. This may be especially true if you're using Apple's new Internet-based installation for Lion. When this happens, even though the installer progress bar has an estimated time remaining underneath it, the time will not change and the bar will not advance.

This mainly happens when the installer is waiting for data to load. The installer will wait for the media to be available, and instead of updating its status … Read more
