The Mitsubishi i vehicles, along with a pair of Mitsubishi Outlander crossovers, were whipping around the Windy City on Monday and Tuesday showing off for attendees of the Sweets & Snacks Expo.

To power its upcoming test fleet of electric vehicles, BMW announced AeroVironment as the preferred supplier and installer for the ActiveE's 240-volt home charging dock.

Based on the 1-Series, the BMW ActiveE has a 32-kWh lithium ion battery pack that provides a 100-mile range. The AeroVironment EVSE-RS charging station uses the industry standard SAE J1772 connector to deliver approximately 25 miles of driving range per hour of charging time. Using the EVSE-RS charger, a completely drained battery can be fully recharged in 4 to 5 hours.

Say you were running an electric-vehicle start-up and trying to figure out how to sell your cars. You might find an instant dealer network of 1,000-plus stores pretty attractive.

At least that's the hope of Best Buy, the Minneapolis-based retail chain.

The consumer electronics chain has been edging into electric transportation, selling Brammo electric motorcycles and winning contracts to install home chargers for the Ford Focus Electric and Mitsubishi i EVs. Best Buy will begin those installations this year.

The 2012 Mitsubishi i will be riding a big wave to Hawaii, the first North American state to receive the all-electric car.

The Japanese automaker today revealed that beginning this month, Hawaiian consumers will be able to reserve the Mitsubishi i for a refundable deposit of $299 on Mitsubishi's Web site.

The Mitsubishi i will be available to test drive at Cutter Mitsubishi in Aiea, Hawaii, this fall.

It's not the biggest or fastest electric vehicle on the market, but when it comes to the U.S. later this year, the Mitsubishi's i will be the cheapest.

Formerly the iMiev, the 2012 Mitsubishi i (ES trim level) will have a starting price of $20,490 after the federal tax credit of $7,500. That makes the four-seater EV almost $5k less than the $32,780 Nissan Leaf. But that lower price also means less range and fewer features.
