Is MSI dual-screen mini-laptop the way to go for future ultraportables?

LAS VEGAS--Amid the tablet, smartbook, and smartphone wars, a new conceptual spin on the old screen-and-keyboard-connected-by-a-hinge way of doing things has us wondering if the idea is so crazy, it just might work.

MSI showed off a concept 7-inch mini-laptop/e-reader at CES, and its most notable feature was the swapping out of the keyboard with a second screen. The device could generate a virtual keyboard in the lower space, or another sort of interface--and, of course, the device could be turned on its side like a book, allowing two-page reading in a more book-like format than single-screen e-readers. It'… Read more

MSI teases three innovative proof-of-concept PCs

LAS VEGAS--Alongside the recently announced Wind Top AE2420 configurable all-in-one desktop, MSI also used CES 2010 to announce a series of concept products, so we stopped by the MSI booth to check them out.

The group includes a 3D all-in-one PC with wireless glasses, another all-in-one with an LED display and a unique sliding design, and finally a fully built computer housed in a small projector. Before you start drooling, we should be clear that all three products are still only proof-of-concepts and have no further information or release dates...yet. Let's take a closer look at the three … Read more

MSI announces new higher-end Wind Top all-in-one

We don't expect MSI will be the last vendor to offer an all-in-one with Intel's new Core i3 and Core i5 CPUs, but it seems to be the first. Starting at $1,199 when it goes on sale in the second quarter of 2010, the MSI Wind Top AE2420 will let you configure a variety of Intel's new processors, along with other higher-end components. This approach is something of a surprise from a vendor we normally associate with budget-priced Nettops.

Other highlights of the Wind Top AE2420 include a 23.6-inch, 1,920x1,080-pixel resolution display, optional … Read more

Inside CNET Labs Podcast 62: The secret to scoring: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left...

We have a very special guest this week, Mr. Jeff Sparkman. Jeff gained notoriety previously by being named CNET's nerdiest employee. Soon after, it was a fast life of drugs, women, and comic books. We discuss at least one of those subjects with him.

Also in this episode, we talk about fighting with the Vulcan nerve pinch, Dong getting beat up by a girl, and Eric crying like a baby while watching "The Lord of the Rings."

Tech this week, we take a look at Lucid's soon-to-be-released tech. Also, Dong schools us on using Windows Media … Read more

ATI and Nvidia cards in one system: Lucid demo Hydra 200

Last year I reported on the Lucid Hydra 100. For details on what Hydra is and how it works, check that post.

This week Lucid is announcing an upgraded solution, the Hydra 200. Hydra allows two video cards to simultaneously be used in a single system.

Before clicking the Back button, yes I know Nvidia and ATI have been doing this for years with their SLI and Crossfire solutions, respectively.

The twist here is that the Lucid technology will allow you to mix and match both ATI and Nvidia cards. According to Lucid, you'll even be able to use … Read more

MSI: Intel Core i7 processors coming to laptops next month

One prolific manufacturer of computers has announced what we had already known for a while: Core i7 laptops are ready to hit soon. And by soon we mean September. MSI has confirmed a series of 15.4- and 17-inch mobile Core i7 laptops that will hit just before the launch of Windows 7.

The question is, will you buy one? For those who aren't familiar, Core i7 processors are excellent at multitasking and hard-core gaming, but are hardly power-friendly. They're the chips that will populate the next generation of eye-popping gaming laptops that will, in most instances, also … Read more

MSI X600 thinbook throws in an optical drive

Despite many Netbooks and thin-and-lights ditching optical drives in favor of more compact computers, corporate folks are apparently still concerned and looking out for us suddenly-DVD-free folk. MSI has announced availability of a new thin-and-light ULV (ultra-low voltage) notebook, the MSI X600, which comes with its own external DVD/CD drive right in the box.

For $899, the X600 comes with a 1.4GHz Intel SU3500 ULV processor, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, a 320GB hard drive, ATI HD 4330 graphics, and a 15.6-inch 1366x768 screen. It includes a six-cell battery, an improvement on the X340, which had a somewhat … Read more
