Image links displayed

Picture hunters know that file names don't always indicate content, and it can be frustrating to click your way through a list of image files, one by one, opening and closing each, just to see what they are. Text to Image is a free Firefox add-on that displays image links as thumbnails that expand when you mouse over them.

We installed Text to Image and restarted Firefox. The program places a small hurricane-shaped icon in the Firefox status bar; clicking it toggles Text to Image on and off. Green indicates the program is active, while red means it's … Read more

Remarkable resizer

We have to admit that we are somewhat impatient by nature, and we absolutely hate photo editing of any sort. It just seems so tedious to us, even when it comes to basic tasks like resizing images. For that reason, we love Prish Image Resizer. Now, instead of opening a separate program, loading our image, and tinkering with the dimensions, we can resize images with a couple of mouse clicks.

The program doesn't have an interface per se; instead, it appears in the context menu whenever you right-click on an image in Windows Explorer. It adds two options to … Read more

Rapid resizing

We resize images all the time--to e-mail to friends, post on blogs, share on Facebook, and much more. Although we often resize images in a photo-editing program as soon as we take them off the camera, it's not uncommon for us to need a resizing tool that can be used the rest of the time. After all, who wants to launch a big photo-editing program for tasks that can be completed with a lightweight utility? That's where Fast Image Resizer comes in. This basic program lets users resize images as quickly and easily as anything we've seen.… Read more

Fast photo tool

Big photo-editing programs like Photoshop are great when you need to do a lot of work on your images, but sometimes you just need a simple tool that can handle cropping, rotating, and other basic editing functions. ExifPro lets users edit, organize, and share images without a lot of hassle.

The program's interface is sleek and intuitive, with its major functions split into well-organized panes, all of which can be moved around within the interface or closed. The Folders pane lets users browse to specific image files, whereas the Images pane displays thumbnails of the images contained within selected … Read more

Compact photo resizer

Just about everybody has a digital camera or picture-taking cell phone, to judge by the number of photo editors out there. Manatee's PhotoWham stands out from the crowd with a unique angle: You set your resizing, renaming, and watermark preferences once, and then drag and drop single images, folders, or whole batches of files for quick, automatic processing. It can add specific text to the beginning or end of file names and save to specific directories.

This compact tool has one of the simplest interfaces we've ever tested: just a main display and two buttons--one activating a settings … Read more

CG A-OK

AVLAN Design describes its AVD Graphic Studio as a "mini Photoshop," acknowledging that Adobe's software is the big dog in the CG yard and that the main goal of competitors is to offer Photoshop-like capabilities in less expensive packages that are easier for ordinary folks to use. At this, AVD Graphic Studio succeeds quite well. It's easy to use, it has most of the basic functionality of the pro-level applications, and it's much less expensive than the big packages like Photoshop.

This program will be familiar if you've used Photoshop or similar applications. Its … Read more

Resize wise

Most PC users have gigabytes of digital images they're going to go through and resize, one by one, and display online or in an album, someday. Why not today? Magic Project's Image Resizer is a simple utility that makes a fast and easy job of resizing nearly all kinds of digital pictures, singly, in bunches, or in big batches.

Although it downloads with full setup and uninstall features, this small program needs no installation. It opens and runs directly from the downloaded executable file, which makes it completely portable; you can even carry it in your camera's … Read more

All-inclusive image editor

Batch It Pro is an all-inclusive program that can batch-edit images, add watermarks, adjust print settings, and rename files. Its user interface took us a few minutes to figure out, but it proved to be a capable image editor.

At first glance, Batch It Pro's interface looks pretty self-explanatory, but we have to admit, it took us a few minutes to figure out how to navigate it. It consists of three panels: the first for loading and processing files, the second for configuring settings, and the third for displaying the before and after shots. Loading files and folders was … Read more

Quick batch processing

Batch Photo Factory lets you quickly apply frames, watermarks, and new naming conventions to a large batch of photos in one fell swoop. While we weren't entirely impressed with its frame options, it performed well in tests.

The program's interface is bland and contained a few spelling errors but was nevertheless functional and easy to navigate. A left-side pane displays the selected image file or folder as well as a file renaming option. We opted to use a common base name with sequential numbers, but you can also keep the original file name and add a prefix. As … Read more

Graphic nightmare

Graphics-Toolbox is a graphic design program. We don't have much to say about it, and what there is, isn't good.

Opening Graphics-Toolbox causes the interface to automatically fill the entire screen, forcing you to minimize the program to switch between applications and generating plenty of annoyance as well. One look at the basic interface with its crude and tiny buttons prompted the question, "Where are the drop-down menus?" It appears that there are none; all tools and functions are accessed from the program's palettes, which we couldn't find a way to move. Movable palettes … Read more
