Summer 2009 Netbook roundup

It feels like we just rounded up all the latest Netbooks a couple of months ago, but there are already enough new models out to do it all over again. This time around, we're seeing some new players in the market (Toshiba, Fujitsu), as well as some new takes on the genre from old hands (Asus, HP).

Trends we're seeing include thinner systems, bigger keyboards, and a push in toward lower prices. The HP Mini 110and Acer Aspire Oneare $329 and $299, respectively, while the average price of a similar Netbook was around $499 late last year, falling to $399 in the past six months.

Later in 2009, we expect to see a new generation of Netbooks that will attempt to add some lift to falling prices by adding features such as high-resolution screens and dedicated graphics processors.

Organizational charts made easy

OrgPlus Professional is an attractive and intuitive solution to managing organization charts. The program strikes the perfect balance between providing a basic structure for the charts and allowing users to customize charts to suit their needs.

The interface is well-organized and features functions and icons that will be familiar to users of such programs as Word and Excel. Mouse-over descriptions provide hints for functions that aren't so obvious. The charts can be created freehand or, more efficiently, using data imported from flat files, Excel, ODBC, SQL Server, LDAP, or Active Directory. Charts can be set to automatically update from … Read more

Sub DiggerPlus simplifies your Digg friend activity

Sub DiggerPlus is a new tool that lets you more easily view sites your friends have submitted to Digg.com. To use it you just drop in your Digg username and it lists all of the stories your friends have submitted in chronological order over the past 24 hours. You can then sort by topic, submitter, and the number of Diggs each story has. The real fun of the service though, is a feature that lets you hop to each site with back and forth buttons, emulating the feeling of navigating an old Web ring.

Compared to Digg's own … Read more

Selling songs as iPhone apps

Eliot Van Buskirk over at Wired has an interesting post today about Seattle band Presidents of the United States of America.

In addition to selling its songs on iTunes in the normal fashion, PUSA has just released a $2.99 application for the iPhone and iPod Touch that will let you stream songs from four albums (the ones whose rights are owned by the band), plus assorted other flotsam (live tracks, demos, whatever).

The application was built by Melodeo, whose vice president of business development is none other than PUSA's Dave Dederer.

The songs are streamed, not downloaded, which … Read more

What is a Netbook, anyway?

It's taken the computer industry a little while to fully embrace the charms of the under-sized Netbook, although with big players such as Dell and Lenovo on board, as well as major retails like Best Buy and Amazon, these small laptops are more popular now then anyone could have anticipated.

We've even finally come to an industry wide agreement on what to call these products, which were originally dubbed mini-notes, sub-notebooks, mini-laptops, etc., before we all settled on "Netbook."

In perhaps the final step towards mainstream acceptance, the eagle-eyed gang over at Laptop mag just spotted Read more

Keep fruit fresh longer

We all want to eat healthy. We go to the grocery store with the best of intentions, bee-line for the produce aisle, and load up on fresh fruit and veggies. We cram all of it into the fridge and head off to make dinner. A week later, we learn that maybe we bought a bit more than we should have when we open the crisper and find our lovely butter lettuce has turned brown and begun to stink. It happens a lot; a recent study from the University of Arizona says that the average American household winds up with more … Read more

More music for the kids

I've had a lot of time this summer to watch how the next generation interacts with music and technology, and it's making me feel like my parents. Two stories to illustrate my point:

1. My 14-year-old niece came to visit last week. One night, she excused herself from the table because she had to take a particular call. As she explained, "My friends brought a portable keyboard with them through the Chick-fil-A drive through and recorded their order as a rap. Now they're sending it to me." (This is the kind of story that sounds … Read more

Photos: Computex buzz on mini-laptops, chips

At Computex 2008 in Taipei, the biggest buzz is about the developing new market for mini-laptops, sub-notebooks, "netbooks"--whatever you want to call them. They're smaller than traditional laptops but larger than PDAs. Tech hearts are also going "buh-boom" over the revolutionary new chips running these tiny PCs of joy. Fleet Foxes, 'White Winter Hymnal': Free MP3 of the Day

Stalwart indie label Sub Pop has been on a particular roll of late, and that continues with local Seattle group Fleet Foxes. The group makes a strangely sublime sort of country-pop, one built around antique arrangements, soulful lyrics, and gauzy gospel-folk harmonies.
